Your Calm Superpowers!

What makes you feel calm?

We all have amazing powers inside us to help us feel better!

Welcome students and introduce the exciting topic of discovering their 'calm superpowers.' Ask them what a superpower is.

Super-Feeling Time!

Sometimes we have big feelings...

Like when you're 😠 mad, 😢 sad, or frustrate

It's okay to feel them! But we can learn to feel calm again.

Explain that today we'll learn some special tricks, or 'superpowers,' that can help them when they feel mad, sad, or frustrated. Emphasize that these are tools they can use.

Superpower 1: Belly Breathing!

Breathe like a balloon!

  • Put your hand on your tummy.
  • Breathe in slowly through your nose, making your tummy get big like a balloon.
  • Breathe out slowly through your mouth, making your tummy get small.
  • Let's try 3 times!

Introduce belly breathing as the first superpower. Explain that it's like blowing up a balloon in their tummy. Model the action clearly.

Superpower 2: Starfish Stretch!

Stretch like a star!

  • Stand up tall like a starfish, arms and legs out wide.
  • Take a deep breath in.
  • As you breathe out, slowly bring your arms and legs together.
  • Let's stretch our bodies!

Introduce the starfish stretch. Explain how it helps to stretch out tension and get ready for a calm moment. Model the stretch.

You've Got This!

Your calm superpowers are always with you!

  • Remember your Belly Breathing.
  • Remember your Starfish Stretch.
  • Practice makes perfect! You are a calm superhero!

Conclude by reminding students that they have these superpowers inside them. Encourage them to try these strategies when they need to feel calm. Emphasize practice.

Warm-Up: Feeling Faces (2 minutes)

Teacher: "Good morning, super learners! Let's start by showing some feeling faces! Can you all show me your happiest face?"

(Pause for student response)

"Great! Now, can you show me a silly face?"

(Pause for student response)

"Fantastic! Now, sometimes we have feelings that are not so happy or silly, right? Like when you feel really mad, or really sad, or super frustrated. Can you show me a face that might look like when you have a big, tough feeling?"

(Pause for student response, acknowledge feelings without dwelling)

"It's okay to have those big feelings. Everyone does! But today, we're going to learn some amazing ways to help our bodies and minds feel calm again. These are like your own special calm superpowers!"

Introduction: What Are Calm Superpowers? (3 minutes)

Teacher: "Let's look at our first slide! Calm Superpowers! Slide Deck (Slide 1) - Your Calm Superpowers!"

"Wow! Look at that! What do you think a superpower is? Shout it out!"

(Pause for student responses, guide to ideas of special abilities, helping others)

"Exactly! A superpower is something amazing you can do! And guess what? You all have calm superpowers inside you right now! These are special things you can do to help yourself feel calm when you have those big, wiggly, or even frustrated feelings. It's about knowing how to make your body and mind feel peaceful again."

"Now, sometimes those feelings can get really big, right? Let's look at our next slide. Calm Superpowers! Slide Deck (Slide 2) - Super-Feeling Time!"

"See these faces? They look pretty upset! It's totally normal to feel mad or sad or even frustrated sometimes. But what if there was a secret trick to help you feel better? A superpower? Well, there is! Today we're going to learn two super cool calm superpowers!"

Superpower Practice: Belly Breathing & Starfish Stretch (8 minutes)

Teacher: "Our first superpower is called Belly Breathing! Let's look at the slide. Calm Superpowers! Slide Deck (Slide 3) - Superpower 1: Belly Breathing!"

"This superpower helps us bring calm air right into our tummies. Can everyone put one hand on their belly? Great! Now, imagine there's a little balloon in your tummy. When you breathe in slowly through your nose, you want to make that balloon get BIG, pushing your hand out. Try it! * (Model slowly taking a deep breath, belly expanding)* "

"Now, when you breathe out slowly through your mouth, make that balloon get SMALL, pushing your hand in. * (Model slowly exhaling, belly contracting)* "

"Let's try it together three times. Big breath in, balloon gets big. Slow breath out, balloon gets small." (Lead students in three belly breaths) "Wonderful! This helps calm your whole body from the inside out. You can do this anytime, anywhere!"

"Our second superpower is the Starfish Stretch! Let's see the slide. Calm Superpowers! Slide Deck (Slide 4) - Superpower 2: Starfish Stretch!"

"Can everyone stand up and make themselves super big, like a giant starfish? Arms out wide, legs out wide!" (Demonstrate) "Feel how strong and stretched you are? Now, take a big breath in while you're a big starfish. And as you breathe out, slowly bring your arms and legs together, making yourself small like a little ball. Give yourself a gentle hug." (Demonstrate)

"Let's try that again. Big starfish, breath in! Little ball, breath out, hug yourself!" (Lead students in 2-3 starfish stretches) "This stretch helps us shake out those wiggles and tight feelings, making our bodies feel more relaxed."

Cool-Down: Starfish Cool-Down (2 minutes)

Teacher: "You have learned two amazing calm superpowers today! Let's remember them. Look at our last slide. Calm Superpowers! Slide Deck (Slide 5) - You've Got This!"

"We learned Belly Breathing and the Starfish Stretch. Remember, these superpowers are always inside you. When you start to feel a big feeling, you can use your breath, you can use your body, to help you feel calm again. Practice them at home, practice them at school, practice them whenever you need a calm moment. You are all calm superheroes!"

"For our cool-down, let's do one more quiet starfish moment, but this time, let's imagine we are slowly floating down to rest on the ocean floor. Stand up like a starfish, big and wide. Now, slowly, slowly, bring your arms and legs in as you sit down gently. Take a deep breath in, and let it out with a soft sigh. Excellent!"

Activity

Calm Breath Practice Activity: My Belly Balloon!

Instructions: Let's practice our Belly Breathing superpower!

  1. Find Your Belly: Lie down or sit comfortably. Place one hand on your belly.
    • Teacher Note: Ensure students are comfortable and can feel their belly move.

  2. Breathe In, Balloon Grows: Close your eyes if you feel safe, or just look at your hand. Slowly breathe in through your nose. Try to make your belly move your hand up as your belly-balloon gets BIG!
    • Teacher Note: Guide students to focus on their belly, not their chest.

  3. Breathe Out, Balloon Shrinks: Slowly breathe out through your mouth, like you're gently letting air out of a balloon. Feel your belly go down as your belly-balloon gets SMALL.
    • Teacher Note: Emphasize slow and controlled exhales.

  4. Repeat and Feel Calm: Let's do this 3-5 times. Notice how your body starts to feel a little calmer with each breath.
    • Teacher Note: Encourage quiet reflection after the practice.

Challenge (Optional): Imagine your favorite calming color filling your belly as you breathe in, and any worried feelings floating away as you breathe out.
