Read through each objective, emphasizing how these skills connect to everyday parenting challenges.

Agenda

  1. Welcome & Introduction (10 min)
  2. De-Escalation Framework Overview (15 min)
  3. Emotional Regulation Tools (15 min)
  4. Break (5 min)
  5. Role-Play Practice (25 min)

Ground Rules

• Confidentiality: What’s shared here stays here
• Respect: Listen without interrupting
• Participation: Share honestly, ask questions
• Support: Encourage and uplift one another

Set ground rules collaboratively: ask participants to agree, add if needed, and commit to a supportive atmosphere.

De-Escalation Framework

  1. Active Listening: Give full attention, reflect back
  2. Empathy: Acknowledge feelings without judgment
  3. Calm Tone & Pace: Speak slowly, lower volume to soothe tension

Introduce the three key de-escalation steps. Emphasize these are sequential but flexible based on the moment.

Key Steps in Action

Active Listening:
• Paraphrase what you hear
Empathy:
• Validate feelings (“That sounds frustrating.”)
Calm Tone:
• Lower your voice, speak slowly

Briefly clarify each step with an example—for instance, reflecting “I hear you’re upset that bedtime came early.”

Emotional Regulation Tools

• Deep Breathing (4-2-6 technique)
• Counting (slowly to 5 before responding)
• Grounding (name 3 things you see/hear/feel)

Lead a brief group breathing exercise: inhale 4 counts, hold 2, exhale 6. Encourage practicing at home when you feel triggered.

Role-Play Practice

• Form pairs and pick a scenario card
• Take turns as parent/child (10 min each)
• Apply de-escalation steps and regulation tools
• Facilitator circulates to observe and offer feedback

Explain the role-play structure: pairs, scenario cards, timing, and facilitator feedback. Encourage focus on using the three steps.

Group Debrief & Reflection

• Complete your Reflection Worksheet
• Share: “What strategies felt natural?”
• Share: “What challenged you?”
• Record key takeaways together

Encourage honest sharing: what worked, what felt hard, and insights gained. Note key themes on the flip chart.

Closing & Next Steps

• Review core strategies and tools
• Commit to one practice for the week
• Additional resources available: handouts, online groups
• Thank you and please complete feedback

Summarize the core ideas and reinforce daily practice. Offer additional supports and collect feedback forms.

Worksheet

De-Escalation Strategy Handout

Use this handout to guide your practice of three core steps: Active Listening, Empathy, and Calm Tone & Pace. Refer back to these definitions and examples as you work through the exercises below.

1. Active Listening

• Definition: Give your full attention, notice feelings, and reflect back what you hear.
• Key Behaviors:

  • Face your child and maintain eye contact
  • Paraphrase their words ("What I’m hearing is…")
  • Avoid interrupting or offering solutions too quickly

Practice:
Think of a recent conflict. How would you demonstrate active listening in that moment? Write your approach below.

2. Empathy

• Definition: Acknowledge and validate your child’s feelings without judgment.
• Example: If your child says, “I hate doing chores,” you might respond, “It sounds like chores feel overwhelming right now.”

Exercise:
Write an empathetic response to this scenario:

• Your child complains, “No one ever lets me have fun!”

Your empathetic statement:

3. Calm Tone & Pace

• Definition: Use a steady, gentle voice and measured pace to lower tension.
• Tip: Breathe before you speak; pause briefly between phrases.

Rewrite Challenge:
Take this directive and calm it down:

“Stop yelling and sit at the table this instant!”

Your calmer version:

4. Putting It All Together

Read the scenario and plan your response using each step separately, then combine into a brief script.

Scenario: Your child bursts into the kitchen, angry about losing screen time privileges.

Active Listening Response:

Empathy Response:

Calm Tone Statement:

Full Response Script:
(Use all three steps in one short conversation.)

5. Next Steps & Reflection

After trying these strategies at home, reflect on your experience:

What felt natural? What challenged you the most?

Activity

Role-Play Scenario Cards

Use these cards in pairs to practice de-escalation strategies. Each pair selects one card, takes turns playing “Parent” and “Child” (10 minutes each), and focuses on using active listening, empathy, and a calm tone.

Card 1: Homework Stall

Scenario:
Your child has been procrastinating on their math homework for an hour and flips the table in frustration, saying, “I hate this! Math is useless!”

Goal:
Help them calm down and guide them back to the task without lecturing.

Card 2: Bedtime Battle

Scenario:
It’s 30 minutes past bedtime. Your child bursts into the living room, upset that they can’t watch one more show: “Everyone else gets a snack and TV!”

Goal:
Validate their disappointment and reinforce the schedule.

Card 3: Screen-Time Showdown

Scenario:
After you limit screen time, your child yells, “You never let me do anything fun!” and storms off to their room slamming the door.

Goal:
Reopen communication and explain the boundary calmly.

Card 4: Chore Clash

Scenario:
You remind your child to clean their room. They snap back, “Why do you always boss me around? It’s not fair!”

Goal:
Acknowledge their feelings and collaborate on a solution.

Card 5: Sibling Squabble

Scenario:
Your two children are fighting over a toy. One accuses the other: “You never share with me!”

Goal:
Help each child feel heard and find a sharing compromise.

Card 6: Morning Mayhem

Scenario:
Your child refuses to get dressed for school and says, “I’m not a morning person!” while crawling under the covers.

Goal:
De-escalate the struggle and motivate a calm morning routine.

Card 7: Loss of Privilege

Scenario:
Your child finds out they’ve lost weekend privileges for missing curfew and shouts, “This is so unfair!”

Goal:
Use empathy to discuss responsibility and next steps.

Card 8: Public Tantrum

Scenario:
At the grocery store, your child throws a tantrum over not getting candy.

Goal:
Practice de-escalation in public and redirect attention respectfully.

Rotate roles, observe each other’s tone and body language, and use your De-Escalation Strategy Handout to guide feedback. Good luck!

Reading

Emotional Regulation Tools Poster

Use these simple techniques to calm your mind and body when tensions rise. Display this poster prominently for quick reference during stressful moments.

1. Deep Breathing (4-2-6 Technique)

• Inhale quietly through your nose for a count of 4
• Hold the breath gently for a count of 2
• Exhale slowly through your mouth for a count of 6

Tip: Place one hand on your belly and one on your chest. Feel your belly rise and fall as you breathe.

2. Slow Counting

• Pause and count silently to 5 before responding to a conflict
• If needed, extend to counting to 10

Tip: Visualize each number as a gentle reminder to stay present and grounded.

3. Grounding Exercise (5-4-3-2-1)

Identify and name:

  1. 5 things you can see around you
  2. 4 things you can touch or feel
  3. 3 things you can hear right now
  4. 2 things you can smell
  5. 1 thing you can taste

Tip: This engages all your senses to anchor you in the present moment.

4. Progressive Muscle Relaxation

  1. Tense one muscle group (e.g., shoulders) for 5 seconds
  2. Release and notice the relaxation for 10 seconds
  3. Move systematically through your body (arms, legs, face)

Tip: Focus on the contrast between tension and release.

5. Visualization (Safe Place)

• Close your eyes and imagine a calm, safe place (a beach, forest, or cozy room)
• Notice colors, sounds, smells, and textures in your mind

Tip: Return to this mental scene whenever you need an emotional break.

For quick reference during role-plays, keep this poster near your Role-Play Scenario Cards and refer back to the De-Escalation Strategy Handout.
