Activity

Behavior Visual Cue Cards Activity

The Behavior Visual Cue Cards are designed to support our lesson on behavior intervention by providing clear, simple visual reminders of coping strategies. This activity is structured to help the student associate images and words with specific actions to manage emotions.

Objectives

  • Identify specific coping strategies through visuals.
  • Understand how each strategy can be applied to manage feelings.
  • Practice the techniques during guided role-play sessions.

Materials

  • A set of visual cue cards featuring a simple image and a short description of each coping strategy (e.g., deep breathing, counting to ten).

Guidelines

  1. Introduce the Cards:

    • Begin by showing each card to the student. Explain the image and the associated strategy, ensuring that the student recognizes the link between the visual and the action.

  2. Guided Practice:

    • Ask the student to mimic the actions shown in the card. For example, if a card illustrates deep breathing, practice taking deep, slow breaths together.

  3. Interactive Role-Play:

    • Use the cue cards in a role-playing scenario. Ask the student to pick a card when they feel upset and demonstrate using the strategy in a calm manner.

  4. **Reinforcement and Positive Feedback:

    • Offer praise and encouragement during the activity to reinforce the effective use of these strategies. Repeat the actions until the student feels confident.

Follow-up Points

  • Reflection Questions:

    • Which card do you feel helps you the most?
    • Can you recall a time when one of these strategies made you feel better?

  • Repetition is Key:

    • Integrate this activity regularly to help reinforce the behavior intervention strategies in real-time scenarios.

This activity helps bridge the gap between understanding a coping strategy and effectively using it when needed. Use these cue cards as a friendly reminder of the tools available to help manage emotions.

Reading

Emotion Regulation Storybook

Once upon a time in a bright and friendly forest, there lived a little squirrel named Sammy. Sammy was cheerful and loved to play in the sunshine. One day, while chasing after his favorite acorns, Sammy felt a flutter in his tummy. He wasn’t sure what was happening—it was as if a shy cloud had tiptoed over his heart.

Sammy didn’t know what to do until his wise friend, Tilly the Turtle, came along. Tilly shared a secret: "When you feel a little upset or confused, take a deep breath and count to three." Curious and eager to learn, Sammy tried it. He took a slow, deep breath, counting softly: "One... two... three..." Suddenly, the fluttering cloud began to fade, replaced by the warm glow of calm.

As Sammy continued his adventure in the forest, he encountered various friends who sometimes felt different emotions. Bella the Bunny got scared in a dark burrow during a storm, and Oliver the Owl felt sad when his favorite tree lost its colorful leaves. With each encounter, Sammy remembered Tilly’s advice. He gently reminded his friends to try deep breaths and to think of happy thoughts. Through his kindness, Sammy showed them that even when big emotions come along, there is a way to feel better.

Before long, Sammy became known as the little helper who always knew how to bring back the sunshine after the rain. Every time a friend felt overwhelmed, they would say, "Let’s count together, just like Sammy and Tilly!" And so, the forest was filled with calm and warm smiles.

Reflection Time

Imagine a time when you felt like Sammy—maybe a little upset or uneasy. What could you do to help yourself feel calm again? Take a moment to think and share your ideas with a friend or teacher.

Remember: sometimes, a deep breath and a quiet moment are all you need to turn cloudy skies into bright sunshine!
