When we subtract, we have LESS.

The Minus Sign!

This is the MINUS sign: -

It tells us to TAKE AWAY!

Introduce the minus sign. Explain that it's the 'take away' sign. Practice writing it in the air. Connect it back to the 'Bye Bye, Numbers!' idea.

Warm-Up: Counting Fun! (5 minutes)

Teacher: "Good morning, everyone! Let's get our brains ready with some counting! Can we all count to 10 together? Ready? 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10! Fantastic! Now, what if we count backward from 5? 5, 4, 3, 2, 1! Great job!"

Teacher: "Sometimes, in math, things disappear or get taken away. Like, if I have three markers (hold up 3), and I give one to a friend (put one behind your back), how many do I have left?"




Teacher: "That's right, two! Today, we're going to learn all about taking away, or 'subtraction'! It's like magic, but with numbers!"

Introduction to Subtraction (Slide Deck & Script) (10 minutes)

Teacher: (Display Bye Bye, Numbers! Slide Deck - Slide 1: "Bye Bye, Numbers! 👋")

Teacher: "Look at our first slide! It says 'Bye Bye, Numbers!' because we're going to make some numbers say goodbye!"

Teacher: (Display Bye Bye, Numbers! Slide Deck - Slide 2: "What is Subtraction?")

Teacher: "This slide tells us that subtraction means to TAKE AWAY! When we take things away, we end up with LESS. Can everyone say 'take away' with me?"

Students: "Take away!"

Teacher: "And 'less'?"

Students: "Less!"

Teacher: (Display Bye Bye, Numbers! Slide Deck - Slide 3: "Let's Try It!")

Teacher: "Let's look at this problem! I have 5 yummy apples. (Point to the 5 apples on the slide or draw them on the board). Oh no! I get hungry and I eat 2 apples! (Mime eating 2 apples, or cross out 2 drawn apples). How many apples do I have left? Can anyone tell me?"




Teacher: "Yes! Three apples are left! Great counting! So, 5 apples 'take away' 2 apples equals 3 apples."

Teacher: (Display Bye Bye, Numbers! Slide Deck - Slide 4: "The Minus Sign!")

Teacher: "To show 'take away' in math, we use a special sign! It looks like a little line, like this: - (Draw the minus sign on the board). This is called the MINUS SIGN! It tells us to take away! Can you make a minus sign in the air with your finger?"

(Pause for students to participate)

Teacher: "Let's try another one with our new minus sign! You have 4 beautiful flowers. (Show 4 manipulatives or draw 4 flowers). You want to be a kind friend and you give 1 flower to your friend. (Remove 1 manipulative or cross out 1 flower). How many flowers do you have now? How can we write that with our minus sign?"




Teacher: "Wonderful! You have 3 flowers left! And we can say '4 minus 1 equals 3!'"

Hands-On Subtraction Activity (10 minutes)

Teacher: (Display Bye Bye, Numbers! Slide Deck - Slide 6: "Your Turn to Subtract! 🙌")

Teacher: "Now it's YOUR turn to be subtraction superstars! Everyone, please take out your counting bears (or blocks)."

(Distribute manipulatives. Introduce the Bye Bye, Numbers! Activity to guide this part.)

Teacher: "Let's do our first problem together. Everyone, put out 3 bears on your desk. Count them with me: 1, 2, 3. Got them?"

Teacher: "Now, I want you to make 1 bear 'bye-bye'! Take 1 bear away and hide it in your hand. How many bears are left on your desk? Shout it out!"

Students: "Two!"

Teacher: "That's right! 3 minus 1 equals 2! Let's try another. Everyone start with 5 blocks. Count them: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. Now, take away 2 blocks. Make 2 blocks disappear! How many are left?"




Teacher: "Fantastic! 3 blocks are left! You are doing an amazing job with 'taking away'!"

Teacher: "You've all been amazing at taking away! Now, we have a special paper to help us practice even more. This is our Subtraction Stars Worksheet."

Bye Bye, Numbers! Hands-On Activity

Materials Needed:

  • 5-10 small manipulatives per student (e.g., counting bears, blocks, pom-poms)

Instructions:

  1. Listen Carefully: Your teacher will give you a number of items to start with.
  2. Count Your Items: Put that many items on your desk and count them to make sure you have the right amount.
  3. Take Away! Your teacher will tell you how many items to "take away." When you take them away, you can put them in your hand or push them to the side.
  4. Count What's Left: Count how many items are still on your desk.
  5. Tell Your Teacher: Be ready to tell your teacher how many items are left!

Example:

  • Your teacher says: "Start with 4 bears. Take away 1 bear."
  • You put out 4 bears: 🐻🐻🐻🐻
  • You take away 1 bear: 🐻🐻🐻 (one goes away!)
  • You count what's left: "1, 2, 3!"
  • You say: "3 bears are left!"
