Building Friendships

Develop social skills and healthy friendships

This lesson is designed to help children ages 9-10 learn how to build and maintain healthy friendships. The lesson includes interactive activities, group discussions, and a reflection period to help students identify key characteristics of good friends and practice social skills.

Step 1

Introduction

  • Welcome the students and briefly discuss the importance of friendships.

  • Ask students to share what qualities they think make a good friend.

Step 2

Activity 1: Friendship Web

15 mins

  • Have students sit in a circle.
  • Give each student a post-it note and a marker.
  • Ask them to write one quality of a good friend on their post-it note.
  • Students then take turns sharing their quality and stick their post-it onto a large sheet of paper to create a 'Friendship Web'.
  • Discuss the web as a group, highlighting common qualities.

Discussion: Building Friendships

  • Use the Discussion Guide to lead a conversation about the qualities shared during the 'Friendship Web' activity.
  • Ask questions to encourage deeper thinking about how these qualities are shown in friendships.

Step 4

Activity 2: Friendship Scenarios

  • Hand out the 'Friendship Scenarios Worksheet'.
  • Explain that students will work in pairs to read through different scenarios and discuss how to handle each situation in a friendly manner.
  • After completing the worksheet, have pairs share their responses with the class.

Reflection

  • Distribute the Reflection Worksheet.
  • Ask students to reflect on what they learned, writing down one thing they will do to be a good friend.
  • Collect the worksheets and close with a brief recap of the lesson's key points.
