Brave Voices Lesson Plan
Students will build confidence speaking English by engaging in warm-up prompts, reading a short passage aloud, discussing ideas, playing a role-play game, completing a creative activity, and reflecting in a worksheet.
This lesson empowers ELL students to practice speaking in a supportive environment, reduce anxiety, and recognize their own brave voices through varied interactive strategies.

Prep
Prepare Materials
5 minutes
- Print or display the following materials:
- Cut out the game cards for role-play.
- Review the content to support ELL needs.
Step 1
Warm-Up
2 minutes
- Display Brave Voices Warm-Up Prompts.
- Ask students to choose one prompt and share with a partner.
- Model by sharing your own answer and praising efforts.
Step 2
Reading
3 minutes
- Pass out Brave Voices Reading Passage.
- Students take turns reading one sentence aloud.
- Encourage clear pronunciation and volume; provide support as needed.
Step 3
Discussion
3 minutes
- Use Brave Voices Discussion Questions.
- Invite volunteers to answer each question.
- Highlight positive responses and reinforce brave speaking.
Step 4
Game
3 minutes
- Distribute Brave Voices Role-Play Game Cards.
- In pairs, students pick a card and role-play the scenario.
- After one minute, switch roles or pairs to share different scenarios.
Step 5
Activity
2 minutes
- Give each student Brave Voices Confidence Activity Sheet.
- Students draw or write about a time they used their brave voice.
- Invite a few students to briefly share their drawing or sentence.
Step 6
Worksheet
2 minutes
- Hand out Brave Voices Confidence Worksheet.
- Students complete the matching exercise for words related to "brave" and "voice."
- Quickly review answers as a class, praising effort and correct answers.

Brave Voices Warm-Up Prompts
Choose one prompt and share with a partner. Be brave and speak clearly!
- Describe a time you tried something new. How did you feel?
- What is one thing you are proud of accomplishing? Why?
- Share a moment when you spoke up in class or with friends. What did you say?
- What word means “being brave” to you? Explain.
- How do you feel when you speak English? Describe in one sentence.

Brave Voices Reading Passage
I feel brave when I speak up in class. My voice is important because it helps me share my ideas. Sometimes I feel nervous, but I take a deep breath and try. Each time I say a word in English, I learn something new. My friends and teacher listen to me and encourage me. When I use my brave voice, I grow more confident every day.

Use these questions to talk about the reading and your own brave voice. Speak clearly and listen carefully!

Brave Voices Role-Play Game Cards
Cut out these cards and give one to each pair. Read your scenario and use your brave voice to role-play with your partner. After one minute, switch cards or partners!
Card 1: At Recess
You want to play a game at recess. Ask a friend to join you.
Card 2: Ask for Help
You do not understand the homework. Ask your teacher for help.
Card 3: At the Ice Cream Shop
You want a chocolate ice cream cone. Order politely from the server.
Card 4: Study Invitation
You have a test tomorrow. Invite a classmate to study with you after school.
Card 5: Apology
You arrived late to class. Apologize to your friend for making them wait.
Card 6: Compliment
You like your classmate’s drawing. Give them a compliment and ask about their art.
