Brave Beginnings Lesson Plan

Students will express first-day feelings, set 2–3 personal goals, and identify preferred coping strategies to begin the school year with confidence.

Building trust and self-awareness reduces anxiety and empowers 6th-graders with IEPs to navigate a new year, classmates, and teachers using personalized goals and coping tools.

Step 1

Warm-Up & Icebreaker

5 minutes

  • Greet the student warmly and explain that today's session is a safe space.
  • Ask a lighthearted question (e.g., “What’s one fun thing you did this summer?”) to build rapport.
  • Briefly outline the session flow so the student knows what to expect.

Step 2

Feelings Exploration

7 minutes

  • Present the First-Day Feelings Chart.
  • Ask the student to select and rate how they feel right now (e.g., nervous, excited, curious).
  • Discuss each chosen feeling: “Why did you pick that?” and validate their experience.
  • Normalize first-day jitters by sharing a brief anecdote if comfortable.

Step 3

Goal Setting

7 minutes

  • Distribute the Personal Goals Worksheet.
  • Guide the student to brainstorm 2–3 school-year goals (academic, social, or emotional).
  • Prompt: “What’s one skill you’d like to improve?” and “How will you know you’ve succeeded?”
  • Encourage the student to write goals in their own words and acknowledge strengths.

Step 4

Coping Skills Toolbox

7 minutes

  • Introduce the Coping Skills Toolbox Cards.
  • Explain several strategies (deep breathing, positive self-talk, taking short breaks).
  • Let the student choose three strategies to include in their personal toolbox.
  • Model and practice one technique together (e.g., a 3-count deep breathing exercise).

Step 5

Reflection & Wrap-Up

4 minutes

  • Offer the Reflection Journal Template.
  • Invite the student to write or draw one key takeaway from today’s session.
  • Summarize their selected coping strategies and goals.
  • Set a tentative focus for the next session and end with positive encouragement.

Choose 3 strategies to include in your toolbox:

• Deep Breathing
• Positive Self-Talk
• Taking Short Breaks
• Stretching
• Counting Slowly

Show the Coping Skills Toolbox Cards. Demonstrate each strategy briefly.

Try It: Deep Breathing

  1. Inhale for 3 seconds (1…2…3)
  2. Hold for 1 second
  3. Exhale for 3 seconds (1…2…3)

Repeat 3 times and notice how you feel.

Lead the student through a 3-count deep breathing exercise. Model it first, then let them practice.

Coping Skills Toolbox Cards

Instructions: Cut along the dotted lines to create individual strategy cards. Let the student pick three to keep in their personal coping toolbox.


Deep Breathing
• Find a quiet spot.
• Inhale slowly for 3–4 seconds.
• Hold for 1 second.
• Exhale for 3–4 seconds.
• Repeat until you feel calmer.


Positive Self-Talk
Pick a phrase and say it out loud or in your head:

  • “I can handle this.”
  • “I am safe and capable.”
  • “One step at a time.”

Grounding 5-4-3-2-1
