Boundary Builders: Skills for Life Coaching Script
Welcome to our Coaching Session on Healthy Boundaries! Today, we're going to explore what healthy boundaries look like, why they're important, and how you can set and maintain them in your life. Here’s a step-by-step script to guide you through this session:
Step 1: Warm Welcome and Introduction (Approx. 5 minutes)
"Hello! I'm so glad you're here today. In our session, we’re going to learn about something really important—healthy boundaries. Do you know what a boundary is? It’s like an invisible line that helps you decide what is okay and what isn’t in your relationships with others."
(Pause for the student’s response. Encourage them to share any ideas they may already have.)
"Great thoughts! Today, our goal is to understand how you can decide what feels safe and what doesn’t, and how to express your feelings and limits kindly and confidently."
Step 2: Exploring Boundaries (Interactive Discussion - Approx. 10 minutes)
"Can you think of a situation where you might need a boundary? For example, maybe when you need some quiet time to work, or when you don’t want others to take your things without asking."
(Allow the student to respond and give an example from their daily life.)
"That’s a wonderful example! Boundaries can protect our space, feelings, and belongings. They help us show respect for ourselves and for others."
(Engage further with follow-up questions such as: "What do you think would happen if there were no boundaries? How might your day change?")
Step 3: Guided Worksheet Activity with the Boundary Skills Worksheet (Approx. 10 minutes)
"Now, we're going to use our Boundary Skills Worksheet. This worksheet has different sections where you can think about what personal boundaries mean to you. As you work through the questions, try to think of situations from your own experiences.
Remember, there are no right or wrong answers—it’s all about understanding what makes you feel safe and respected!"
(Hand over the Boundary Skills Worksheet and guide the student to fill it in step by step.)
"Let’s start with the first question: What is one place or situation where you feel very comfortable?"
(Wait and allow the student time to write their answer. Use prompts if the student needs help: "Is it your classroom? Your home? Maybe a club or a friend’s house?")
Once the student has written, ask, "How about one situation where you felt you needed a little more space? Why do you think that is?"
Step 4: Reflection and Wrap-up (Approx. 10 minutes)
"Great job on your worksheet! Let’s take a few minutes to review what we’ve learned today. What did you notice about your choices? Was there anything that surprised you about where you need these boundaries?"
(Encourage the student to share one insight or learning from the session.)
"Thank you for sharing that. It’s very important to know your own needs and how to communicate them. As you keep practicing these skills, remember to speak up kindly when you need your space, and also listen to others when they share theirs.
Before we finish, do you have any questions or thoughts about what we discussed today?"
(Pause and address any final questions.)
"You did an amazing job today! I’m really proud of how you worked through your thoughts about boundaries. Keep practicing these skills, and soon setting healthy boundaries will feel natural. I’m looking forward to hearing more about how you use these skills in your daily life. Have a great day!"
End of the Skills for Life Coaching Script. Use this script as your guide to support and empower our 5th-grade student. Good luck, and remember that every step towards understanding your personal space is a step towards a happier, healthier you!
