What Are Boundaries?

Boundaries are the limits we set to protect our personal space, feelings, and time. They help define how we expect to be treated in our relationships.

Why Do Boundaries Matter?

Healthy boundaries ensure mutual respect, prevent misunderstandings, and help manage conflicts effectively.

Emphasize the importance of boundaries for maintaining healthy relationships. Share examples that resonate with the students' experiences.

How to Set Healthy Boundaries

Activity

Boundaries Matter: Role-Play Activity

Activity: Boundary Role-Play

Overview

In this activity, students will work in pairs or small groups to role-play realistic scenarios where setting and respecting boundaries are key. This activity helps translate the strategies discussed in the lesson into real-life situations that you might encounter in friendships.

Guidelines

  • Pair or Group Up: Form pairs or small groups of 3-4 students.
  • Scenario Assignment: Each group will receive a scenario that depicts a common situation in which boundaries might be needed. (Teacher may provide scenarios based on common friendship challenges.)
  • Role Assignment: Decide who will play the role of a person setting a boundary and the role of someone responding to that boundary.
  • Practice and Rotate: Run through the scenario for about 3-4 minutes. After each round, consider switching roles so that everyone has a chance to practice both setting and respecting boundaries.

Questions to Consider

  • How did it feel to express your needs or assert your boundary?
  • What strategies did you use to communicate clearly?
  • Were there moments of discomfort, and how did you manage them?
  • How did the person on the other side respond? Was the boundary respected?

Follow-Up Discussion

After the role-play sessions, come back together as a class and discuss:

  • What challenges did you face during the role-play?
  • Which communication strategies worked best for setting clear boundaries?
  • How can practicing these strategies help improve your friendships in real life?

Reflection Questions

  1. What did you learn about yourself during this role-play?
  2. How might you adjust or improve your approach to setting boundaries in the future?
  3. Can you think of a real situation where these skills might help you?

Remember: The objective here is to practice and internalize the skills of clear, respectful communication. Every experience contributes to building healthier relationships.

Good luck, and enjoy the role-play activity!
