  • Gather necessary materials for each activity (e.g., various picture books, drawing paper, crayons, craft supplies, old magazines).

Step 1

Session 1: The Magic of Stories

30 minutes

Introduction (5 minutes)

  • Begin by asking students: "What do you love about books? What kind of magic can books hold?" Engage them with questions like: "Have you ever traveled to another world in a book?"

Activity: Story Time & Book Exploration (15 minutes)

  • Read aloud an engaging picture book, emphasizing the joy of storytelling.
    - After the story, display a variety of books (picture books, fairy tales, non-fiction with lots of pictures). Let students briefly explore them, encouraging them to talk about the covers and what they think the books are about.

Wrap-up (10 minutes)

  • Discuss what makes books magical. Emphasize that books can take us on adventures, teach us new things, and make us feel many different emotions.
    - Preview the next session, focusing on how we can become 'book detectives' to learn more about stories.

Step 2

Session 2: Becoming Book Detectives

30 minutes

Introduction (5 minutes)

  • Review the magic of books. Ask: "What are some important parts of a story? How can we figure out what a book is about before we even read it?"

Activity: Cover Clues & Story Elements (15 minutes)

  • Show students various book covers. Guide them to predict what the story might be about based on the title and pictures.
    - Introduce basic story elements: Character (who), Setting (where), and Event (what happens).
    - Use the Story Elements Spinner Activity to practice identifying these elements in a familiar story or by creating new ones.

    - Discuss the importance of authors and illustrators.
    - Emphasize that understanding these clues helps us understand and appreciate stories better.

Step 3

Session 3: Books, Crafts, and Creativity

Activity: Character Craft or Setting Art (15 minutes)

  • Read a short story that has a memorable character or a vivid setting.
    - Provide various craft supplies (paper, crayons, glue, old magazines, fabric scraps).
    - Challenge students to create a craft based on a character from the story or draw a picture of the setting.
    - Discuss the Book Nook Creator Project Guide as a longer-term project to foster personal reading spaces.

Wrap-up (10 minutes)

  • Share their creations and explain their choices. Emphasize how books can spark our creativity and imagination.
    - Encourage students to connect with books in creative ways at home.

  3. In the first section, draw different Characters (e.g., a brave knight, a talking cat, a curious child).
  4. In the second section, draw different Settings (e.g., a spooky forest, a sunny beach, a tall castle).
  5. In the third section, draw different Events (e.g., finding a treasure, getting lost, making a new friend).
  6. Cut out a small arrow and attach it to the center of your plate with the brad so it can spin!

How to Play:

  1. Spin for a Character! Spin your arrow and see what character it lands on.
  2. Spin for a Setting! Spin again and see where your story will take place.
  3. Spin for an Event! Spin one last time to find out what happens in your story!

What You Will Do:

  1. Dream Up Your Nook (Planning):

    • Think about your favorite places to read. What makes them cozy? What would make a reading space perfect for you?
    • Will your Book Nook be a special corner in your room, a blanket fort, or maybe a drawing of your dream reading spot?
    • Draw a picture of your Book Nook idea below!

    • Look for things around your house that could make your Book Nook special: pillows, blankets, a small lamp, your favorite stuffed animals, drawings, or even a small shelf for books.
    • If you are building a model or drawing, gather art supplies like paper, crayons, markers, glue, and maybe some craft items.
  3. Build or Design Your Nook (Creation):

    • For a Real Nook: Choose a quiet spot. Arrange your pillows, blankets, and other cozy items. Make it your own special place to read!
    • For a Model/Drawing: Use your art supplies to create your Book Nook. Be creative! What colors will it have? What books will be there? Will there be windows looking out into a magical world?

  4. Present Your Book Nook (Sharing):

    • Share your Book Nook with your class or family. Explain why you chose the things you did and what makes it your perfect reading adventure spot.
