Exploring Cyberbullying: Forms, Impact, and How We Can Respond Effectively

Welcome students! Introduce today’s topic on cyberbullying. Explain that in the next 15 minutes we’ll learn to recognize, respond to, and prevent online harassment.

Lesson Objectives

• Identify common forms of cyberbullying
• Understand its emotional and social impact
• Practice safe and supportive response strategies

Read the objectives aloud. Emphasize what students will gain by the end of the lesson.

What is Cyberbullying?

Cyberbullying is the use of digital devices to harass, threaten, or humiliate someone.
Examples include mean texts, spreading rumors online, exclusion from group chats, or impersonation.

Define cyberbullying in your own words, then show the definition. Ask if anyone has witnessed or experienced these behaviors online.

Forms of Cyberbullying

• Harassment: Repeatedly sending mean or threatening messages
• Exclusion: Leaving someone out of online groups or chats
• Impersonation: Hacking or creating fake profiles
• Rumor-spreading: Posting lies or gossip

Briefly review each form. Invite students to give examples they’ve seen.

Scenario Analysis

Open the Cyberbullying Scenarios Handout.
In pairs:

  1. Identify the type of cyberbullying in each scenario.
  2. Discuss how the victim might feel.

Direct students to their handouts. Explain they have 5 minutes in pairs to read and discuss.

Response Strategy Brainstorm

Refer to the Response Strategy Poster.
Suggest strategies for each category:
• Prevent
• Respond
• Support

Display the poster. Encourage students to call out ideas quickly; record on the board under each category.

Digital Kindness Pledge

I pledge to:
• Think before I post or share
• Speak up kindly online
• Stand with friends who are targeted
• Report bullying to a trusted adult

Project the pledge. Read it line by line, then have students write or recite it together. Ask for volunteers to share one commitment.

Key Takeaways

• Recognize different forms of cyberbullying
• Use Prevent, Respond, and Support strategies
• Commit to digital kindness and seek help when needed

Summarize the main points and remind students of resources (counselor, teacher, parent) if they need help.
