Lesson Plan

Blueprint Planning Guide

Guide the student to create a personalized behavioral blueprint: identify 1–2 target behaviors, map triggers and responses, plan proactive strategies, and set up monitoring and reflection to foster self-awareness and positive change.

This lesson helps the student gain self-awareness by identifying specific behaviors and triggers, empowers them with proactive strategies, and establishes a clear system for progress tracking and reflection to support academic and social success.

Welcome to Your Behavioral Blueprint

Today, we’ll work together to build your very own behavioral blueprint—a personalized plan to help you succeed by identifying behaviors, mapping triggers, and choosing strategies. Let’s get started!

Welcome the student and set a positive tone. Explain that today’s goal is to build a personalized plan called a behavioral blueprint. Mention that you’ll move step-by-step through identifying behaviors, mapping triggers, and planning strategies.

What is a Behavioral Blueprint?

A behavioral blueprint is a step-by-step plan that helps you understand:
• Which behaviors you want to improve
• What triggers them
• The strategies you can use
• How you'll track your progress

Define the concept in simple terms. Emphasize that it’s a plan they own. Use examples if needed.

Why Create a Blueprint?

• Increases self-awareness
• Empowers you to handle challenges
• Provides clear steps to improve
• Tracks progress so you can celebrate wins and adjust as needed

Highlight benefits. Relate to student’s everyday life: schoolwork, friendships, games.

Identify Your Target Behaviors

Think about 1–2 behaviors you'd like to improve today (for example, staying on task or managing frustration).

We’ll write clear, measurable statements together.

Guide the student to name 1–2 behaviors. Refer to examples in the Blueprint Planning Guide. Clarify what makes a behavior statement specific and measurable.

Map Triggers & Responses

We’ll use the Trigger-Response Map Worksheet to:
• Identify what usually triggers your behavior
• Note how you typically respond
• Spot patterns that will guide our strategy choices

Explain the mapping process. Show a sample worksheet entry if possible. Encourage honesty and open discussion.

Plan Strategies & Track Progress

• Brainstorm proactive strategies (e.g., deep breathing, asking for help)
• Set short-term, achievable goals
• Use the Progress Monitoring Rubric and Daily Behavior Reflection Journal to log your progress

Introduce the idea of proactive strategies. Show how goals tie into tracking tools. Emphasize that monitoring helps adjust strategies over time.

Today’s Session Outline

  1. Warm-up & Overview (5 min)
  2. Choose Target Behaviors (8 min)
  3. Trigger-Response Mapping (8 min)
  4. Strategy Development (7 min)
  5. Monitoring & Reflection Setup (7 min)

Total: 35 minutes

Provide a quick roadmap so the student knows what to expect and how long each part will take.
