Slide Deck

Behavior Detectives

Welcome, Investigators! Today, you are detectives on a mission to solve the Behavior Mystery using your clue-collecting skills.

Welcome students to the Behavior Detectives session. Explain that they will become detectives on a mission to solve a classroom behavior mystery by gathering and classifying clues.

Our Mission

  • A friend is having trouble telling good and not-so-good behaviors
  • We need to gather clues and classify them
  • When we crack the case, we’ll celebrate our detective teamwork!

Read each bullet. Emphasize teamwork and the importance of behavior classification to help our friend.

What Is a Clue?

A clue is an example of a behavior you see in the classroom. It can be appropriate or inappropriate. We collect clues to figure out the mystery!

Define “clue” for students. Give one quick example: raising your hand is a clue of an appropriate behavior.

Clue Types

Appropriate Behaviors:

  • Raising hand to speak
  • Sharing materials
  • Listening quietly

Inappropriate Behaviors:

  • Shouting out answers
  • Pushing in line
  • Interrupting others

Go through each example. Ask if any students have other examples they want to share.

Team Clue Hunt

  1. Form teams of 3–4 detectives
  2. You will receive Behavior Clue Hunt cards
  3. Decide if each clue is Appropriate or Inappropriate
  4. Keep your clue stack ready for the Case File Recording

Explain how to form teams and distribute the Clue Hunt cards. Remind students to discuss each card and work together.

Discussion

Detective Debrief Guide

Purpose: Wrap up your detective work by reflecting on clues, understanding behaviors, and reinforcing positive social skills.

1. Reflect on the Clue Hunt

  • Which behavior clues were easy to classify? Why?

  • Which clues were tricky or made you stop and think? Why?

2. Explore Appropriate Behaviors

  • Why is it important to raise your hand before speaking or wait quietly?
    • Follow-up: How does this help everyone learn?

  • Think of a time you helped a friend or shared something. How did it make you and your friend feel?

3. Examine Inappropriate Behaviors

  • Which inappropriate behavior could cause the biggest problem in class? Why?

  • If someone shouts out an answer without raising their hand, what could you say or do to help them remember the rule?

4. Problem-Solving Turnaround

  • Pick one inappropriate behavior from the case file. How can we change it into an appropriate behavior? Describe the new action.

5. Detective Pledge and Celebration

  • Ask each student to share one promise: “I will be a behavior detective by __________.”

  • Celebrate as a team: Give out “Behavior Detective” stickers or high-fives to recognize good work.

Teacher Tips:

  • Encourage all students to speak; praise participation.
  • Reinforce that mistakes help us learn about behaviors.
  • Remind detectives that they can continue practicing these skills every day.
