Structured Self-Monitoring for On-Task Behavior

Welcome students and introduce today’s session on improving focus. Share that we’ll learn how to monitor our own behavior to stay on-task.

What Is Self-Monitoring?

Self-monitoring means checking in with yourself to see if you’re staying focused. You’ll learn to notice your behavior and record it at regular intervals.

Define self-monitoring. Emphasize that it’s about noticing and recording your own focus level throughout activities.

Why Monitor Your Behavior?

  • Helps you stay focused
  • Builds self-awareness
  • Shows your teacher how hard you’re trying

Explain the benefits. Relate each point back to students’ classroom routines and independence.

On-Task Behavior Chart

Every 5 minutes:

  1. Ask “Am I focused?”
  2. Mark 👍 for on-task or 👎 for off-task on your On-Task Behavior Chart.

Display a sample chart. Walk through each step slowly, modeling how to ask the question and mark the chart.

Let’s Try It

In pairs, fill out one 5-minute interval of the chart based on a quick mock scenario. Ready?

Project the mock scenario. Guide students as they practice filling out one interval in pairs. Check for understanding.

Independent Monitoring

During our next activity, you’ll:

  • Work on a simple reading or drawing task
  • Check your focus every 5 minutes
  • Mark your chart each time

Remind students to set timers or listen for interval cues. Encourage them to keep going and offer praise.

Reflection Time

At the end:

Explain that reflection helps plan next steps. Invite volunteers to share after they finish.
