Script

Encouragement Script for Tier 2 Group Session

This script provides exactly what the teacher will say, with prompts and follow-ups to guide a 25-minute small-group session. Use positive, conversational language and refer to other materials as needed.

1. Opening & Expectations (3 minutes)

Teacher (smiling, welcoming):
“Good afternoon, everyone! Welcome to our Behavior Boost session. Today we’re going to learn how to notice and celebrate our own good choices and help our friends do the same. That means we’ll use our eyes, our ears, and our hearts!”

Teacher (gesturing to the slide):
“Let’s look at our first slide on Behavior Boost Presentation. We have three goals today:

  1. Use a self-monitoring checklist.
  2. Notice and record positive behaviors.
  3. Celebrate successes together.

Can anyone tell me why it might be helpful to notice our own good choices?”

Student Response (possible):
“I don’t know.”

Teacher (prompting):
“That’s okay—think about a time you felt proud of yourself. How did that feel?”

Follow-Up Prompts:

  • “It felt like a warm fuzzy inside, right?”
  • “Noticing good things helps us feel even better about ourselves!”

Teacher:
“Awesome. Before we begin, let’s remind ourselves of our group norms: respect, honesty, and active participation. If we agree, give me a thumbs-up!”

(Pause for thumbs-up.)

Teacher:
“Great! Let’s dive in.”

2. Introducing the Self-Monitoring Checklist (7 minutes)

Teacher (holding up a sample checklist):
“Now, we have a special tool: our self-monitoring checklist. I’m showing Slide 3 on Behavior Boost Presentation. It lists positive actions you can look for.”

Teacher (reading slide):
“• Raising hand to speak
• Listening quietly
• Helping classmates

When you see one of these, you simply put a checkmark next to it on your paper.”

Teacher (distributing checklists from Checklist Celebration Game):
“Here’s your checklist. Watch me model one: if I see someone raise their hand, I say, ‘I see you raised your hand—well done!’ and make a check here.”
(Teacher draws a check next to “Raising hand.”)

Teacher:
“Let’s practice together. I’ll act out a behavior, you’ll tell me what step I should check.”

Teacher (pretends to wait quietly with hands folded):
“What would you check?”

Expected Answer:
“Listening quietly!”

Teacher:
“Exactly. Listening quietly. Check!”
(Teacher checks the box.)

Teacher:
“Any questions about the checklist items?”

Follow-Up if Needed:

  • “What if I see something not listed? You can still notice it—just tell me what it was.”
  • “We’ll practice more in a moment.”

3. Practice & Role-Play (8 minutes)

Teacher:
“Time to team up! Turn to a partner near you.”

Teacher:
“Each pair will get a scenario slip. One of you will role-play the behavior, and the other will use the checklist to catch it and say something positive.”

Teacher:
“Use these sample phrases from our Encouragement Script: ‘Great job showing kindness!’ or ‘I noticed you waited your turn—thank you!’”

Teacher (handing out scenario slips):
“Pair 1, you start. Show me raising your hand. Partner, watch and cheer them on with your checklist.”

(After 1 minute, teacher rings a soft chime.)

Teacher:
“Switch roles now! And remember to speak clearly and with a smile.”

(Circulate, whispering encouragement cues: “Use the phrase, ‘Thank you for…’ ” or “Don’t forget to check it off!”)

Teacher (after 3 minutes):
“Fantastic! Let’s hear from one pair: tell us what behavior you spotted and what you said.”

Student Share:

Teacher (celebrating):
“Wonderful! That’s exactly the kind of positive noticing we want.”

4. Checklist Celebration Game (5 minutes)

Teacher (showing Slide 6 on Behavior Boost Presentation):
“Next up: the Checklist Celebration Game! Here’s how it works:
• We’ll do a short silent reading time for 2 minutes.
• While you read, watch a partner and check off any of the behaviors you see.
• After time’s up, we’ll count who has the most checks. Those top observers earn a sticker and a high-five!”

Teacher:
“Ready? On your mark—get set—go!”

(Sets timer for 2 minutes; students read and monitor.)

Teacher (when timer dings):
“Time’s up! Count your checks quietly.”

Teacher:
“Who got the most checks?”
(Allows hands to go up.)

Teacher (handing out stickers):
“Congratulations! You’re our top observer today—great job! Everyone, give them a clap!”

5. Wrap-Up & Reflection (2 minutes)

Teacher (gathering attention):
“We’re almost done. Let’s share one positive choice you noticed or made.”

Teacher (calling on students one by one):
“Student A, what did you notice?”

Student A:
“I saw Student B help me pass out pencils.”

Teacher:
“Perfect! Helping classmates is a wonderful choice. Thank you for sharing.”

(Continue for 2–3 students.)

Teacher:
“As you head back to class, remember: every day you can use this checklist. Each check is a step toward proud moments and our celebration wall!”

Teacher (closing with enthusiasm):
“You all did a fantastic job today. Keep noticing, keep checking, and keep celebrating each other. Behavior Boost—you’re off the charts!”
