Behavior Boost: Spotlight on Success
Reinforcing Positive Behaviors with Tier 2 PBIS Supports
Welcome everyone! Today well kick off our Behavior Boost session. Introduce yourself and explain that well learn how to spotlight successes, play a fun game, and reflect on our behaviors.
Session Objectives
• Understand Tier 2 MTSS Supports
• Identify Key PBIS Reinforcement Strategies
• Play the Point-Paddle Relay Game
• Complete a Behavior Reflection Log
Read each objective aloud. Explain that meeting these goals will help us celebrate good choices and keep our classroom climate positive.
What Is Tier 2 Support?
Targeted group interventions for students who benefit from extra positive behavior reinforcement to prevent challenges from escalating.
Define Tier 2 supports in simple terms. Emphasize that small-group interventions help us practice and strengthen positive behaviors.
PBIS Reinforcement Strategies
• Specific Praise (“I noticed you…”)
• Tangible Rewards (stickers, tokens)
• Spotlighting Success (sharing wins with peers)
Discuss each strategy. Give examples (e.g., “Great job lining up quietly, Maria!”). Encourage specificity in praise.
Point-Paddle Relay Game
An active team game where students earn points by demonstrating positive behaviors.
See the full guide: Point-Paddle Relay Guide
Explain the relay mechanics: teams take turns using paddles to earn points for positive choices. Refer students to the guide for details.
Behavior Reflection Log
Use this worksheet to record todays successes and set a goal for your next positive behavior.
Download: Behavior Reflection Log
Show students their reflection log worksheet. Walk through each section: what went well, what to try next time, and goal setting.
Let’s Celebrate Success!
Share one positive behavior you demonstrated today.
Give each other high-fives to recognize good choices!
Invite each student to share one thing they did well today. Encourage applause or high-fives for each share.
Next Steps
• Complete your reflection log at home
• Keep practicing positive behaviors
• Facilitators: see the Group Intervention Guide for follow-up activities
Explain what comes next: continued reflection and support. Point to the facilitator guide for additional activities.
Worksheet
Behavior Reflection Log
Name: ____________________________ Date: _______________
1. What positive behavior(s) did you demonstrate today?
2. How did you feel when you made these positive choice(s)?
3. What can you try next time to make an even better choice?
4. Set a specific goal for your next class session related to your behavior.
5. If you reach your goal, what reward will you choose? Describe it.
Keep this log in your folder. Reflect on it at home or with a trusted adult. Continue practicing your positive behaviors to earn your chosen reward!
Game
Point-Paddle Relay Game
Objective: Reinforce and celebrate specific positive behaviors by having students work as teams to earn points in a fun, active relay.
Materials:
- 4–6 lightweight paddles (one per team)
- Point tokens or cards (100 total)
- Behavior Prompt Cards (examples of PBIS behaviors)
- Timer or stopwatch
- Scoreboard (chart or whiteboard)
Setup:
- Divide students into 4 teams of 3–4.
- Place one paddle and a stack of Behavior Prompt Cards at each team’s start line.
- Keep the point tokens and scoreboard within easy view of all teams.
- Explain that each correct demonstration or example of a positive behavior earns a token.
How to Play:
- On the teacher’s “Go,” the first student in each line picks up the paddle and draws a Behavior Prompt Card (e.g., “Helping a friend pick up dropped supplies,” “Using a quiet voice in the hallway”).
- The student holds the paddle and either:
• Acts out the behavior on the card, or
• Gives a clear, specific example of when they did that behavior. - If the demonstration or example meets the criteria (specific, on-point, positive), the teacher awards one point token. If not, the student returns the card to the bottom of the pile, and the team tries again on their next turn.
- The student places the paddle on the ground, tags the next teammate in line, who repeats steps 1–3.
- Continue until the timer rings (10–12 minutes).
- Count each team’s tokens. The team with the most tokens wins a small celebration: special shout-out, a sticker for each member, or the class’s applause.
Game Rules:
• Only one student at a time may hold a paddle.
• Behavior examples must be specific (“I…,” “When I…”) to earn a token.
• Encourage cheering and support—no negative comments if a team’s example isn’t accepted.
Modifications & Extensions:
• For larger groups, add more teams or rotate stations every 5 minutes.
• To focus on a single behavior focus (e.g., “quiet voices”), customize the Behavior Prompt Cards accordingly.
• Advanced groups can earn bonus tokens for especially detailed examples or peer-to-peer praise.
Debrief & Follow-Up:
- After the relay, gather students in a circle.
- Ask:
• What was your favorite behavior example? Why?
• How did it feel to notice and share positive choices?
• Which behavior will you practice tomorrow? - Invite students to record their thoughts on the Behavior Reflection Log.
- Remind them that every positive choice helps our classroom community—and that we’ll keep spotlighting successes in our next session!

1. Welcome & Session Objectives (5 minutes)
Teacher stands at the front, click to Slide 1: “Behavior Boost: Spotlight on Success.”
Teacher (smiling, energetic):
"Good afternoon, everyone! Welcome to our Behavior Boost session. I’m Ms./Mr. [Name], and today we’re going to learn how to spotlight our successes, have fun playing a game, and reflect on the positive behaviors we practice.
Let’s start by looking at our objectives so we know where we’re headed."
Click to Slide 2: “Session Objectives.”
Teacher (pointing):
"Here’s what we’ll do together today:
• Understand Tier 2 MTSS supports
• Identify key PBIS reinforcement strategies
• Play the Point-Paddle Relay Game
• Complete a Behavior Reflection Log
By the end, you’ll be ready to keep practicing and celebrating great choices in our classroom! Any quick questions about our plan?"
Possible student responses: “No.” “Sounds good!”
Teacher: "Great—let’s dive in!"
2. What Is Tier 2 Support & PBIS Strategies (5 minutes)
Click to Slide 3: “What Is Tier 2 Support?”
Teacher:
"Tier 2 support means small-group help to reinforce positive behaviors before small problems become big ones. Think of it as a power-up for doing your best choices.
Turn to your neighbor and whisper, ‘What does Tier 2 support sound like to you?’"
Pause 20 seconds, then invite two students to share.
Teacher (after sharing):
"Excellent ideas! Tier 2 is all about extra practice and encouragement."
Click to Slide 4: “PBIS Reinforcement Strategies.”
Teacher (reading bullets):
"We use three key strategies:
- Specific Praise – ‘I noticed you shared your markers with Maria!’
- Tangible Rewards – stickers, tokens, or pencils.
- Spotlighting Success – sharing wins with our class.
Can someone give me an example of specific praise you might use with a friend?"
Possible student response: “I saw you lined up quietly—that was great!”
Teacher:
"Perfect! That’s exactly the kind of praise that helps everyone feel proud."
3. Play the Point-Paddle Relay Game (10 minutes)
Click to Slide 5: “Point-Paddle Relay Game.”
Teacher:
"Now we’re going to play an active relay to practice those behaviors—and earn points together! Here’s how it works, and we’ll follow the steps in our Point-Paddle Relay Guide."
- Divide into teams of 3–4.
- At your line, you’ll find a paddle and Behavior Prompt Cards.
- On ‘Go,’ the first person draws a card, holds the paddle, and either acts out the behavior or gives a specific example when they did it.
- If it’s on point, you earn a token. If not, return the card and try again later.
Teacher (smiling):
"Let’s get our teams ready. Everyone pick a paddle station and stand behind your line. You have 30 seconds—go!"
After 30 seconds, blow a whistle or say “ready.”
Teacher:
"Places ready? On my count: 3…2…1…Go!"
Teacher circulates, awards tokens, keeps time. With 2 minutes left, say:
"Two minutes remaining—make those examples count!"
When time’s up:
Teacher (whistle):
"Hands on hips, paddles down! Let’s count tokens. Which team has the most?"
Celebrate the winning team with a group cheer or their chosen small reward.
4. Behavior Reflection Log (5 minutes)
Click to Slide 6: “Behavior Reflection Log.”
Teacher (handing out worksheets):
"Great work, everyone! Now let’s think about what you did. Please take your Behavior Reflection Log. You have five minutes to fill each section honestly."
Teacher (circulating, quietly prompting):
• “What positive behavior did you demonstrate?”
• “How did that make you feel?”
• “What’s one thing you can try next time?”
If a student is stuck, ask: “Remember how you helped Sarah earlier—can that be a good example?”
5. Celebrate & Share Success (3 minutes)
Click to Slide 7: “Let’s Celebrate Success!”
Teacher:
"Who would like to share one positive behavior they wrote down?"
Invite two or three students to share, encouraging applause or high-fives after each.
Teacher (enthusiastic):
"I love hearing your stories! Celebrating each other builds our strong, positive classroom climate."
6. Next Steps & Closing (2 minutes)
Click to Slide 8: “Next Steps.”
Teacher:
"You did an amazing job today. Here’s what’s next:
- Finish any unfinished reflection at home.
- Keep practicing these positive behaviors every day.
- I’ll check in next session to see your progress and keep celebrating!
Thank you for your energy today—let’s continue building our success together!"
End session with a class cheer or a special clap sequence.
