Be the Change: Solving Real-World Problems

Students will be able to apply a structured problem-solving model to a relevant social issue and propose a viable solution.

Understanding how to approach and solve problems systematically is a crucial life skill. This lesson empowers students to not just identify issues but to actively work towards creating positive change in their school or community, fostering critical thinking and civic engagement.

5 minutes

  • Display the first slide of the Slide Deck: From Problem to Solution.
    - Ask students to recall some of the social issues discussed in Unit 3. Briefly discuss 2-3 examples as a class.

Step 2

Introduction to the Problem-Solving Model

10 minutes

  • Introduce the IDEAL problem-solving model using the Slide Deck: From Problem to Solution.
    - Identify the problem
    - Define the context
    - Explore solutions
    - Act on a solution
    - Look back and learn
    - Explain each step clearly, providing simple examples as you go.

Step 3

Guided Practice: Applying the Model

15 minutes

  • Distribute the Social Problem-Solving Worksheet.
    - As a class, choose a relevant school or community problem (e.g., litter in the hallways, lack of healthy snack options, a local park needing clean-up).
    - Guide students through the first three steps (Identify, Define, Explore) of the IDEAL model on their worksheets, using the chosen problem as an example. Encourage brainstorming and discussion for solutions.

  • Divide students into small groups.
