Lesson Plan

Be a School Superstar Lesson Plan

In this lesson, the student will identify and demonstrate four key school expectations—listening, following directions, staying on task, and respecting others—through discussion, modeling, role-play, and reflection. The student will set a personal behavior goal for upcoming classes.

Understanding and practicing classroom expectations builds the student’s confidence, reduces misunderstandings, and fosters a positive learning environment. Individual support ensures that the student internalizes norms and succeeds in mainstream settings.

Slide Deck

Be a School Superstar

• A 30-minute one-on-one lesson
• Learn four key school expectations:

  1. Listening
  2. Following Directions
  3. Staying on Task
  4. Respecting Others

Welcome the student warmly. Introduce the lesson purpose: learning about key school expectations to become a ‘School Superstar.’ Ask an opening question to engage interest.

Warm-Up Discussion

• Ask: “What school rules do you know?”
• Show each School Expectations Card
• Discuss what each rule means

Begin the warm-up. Ask “What are some rules or expectations we have at school?” Show the School Expectations Cards one at a time. Encourage the student to explain each card in their own words.

Modeling Expectations

• Display & read each card aloud
• Teacher models the behavior
• Student describes the model
• Give positive feedback

For each expectation, display the card, read it aloud, then model the correct behavior (“Here’s how I listen quietly”). Ask the student to describe what they observed. Provide praise after each description.

Role-Play Practice

• Shuffle Role-Play Scenario Cards
• Student picks & acts out scenario with teacher
• Offer real-time feedback
• Award stickers/tokens for success

Shuffle the Role-Play Scenario Cards. Let the student pick one and act it out together. Offer prompts as needed. Award stickers or tokens for strong demonstrations.

Independent Application

• Timer: 2 minutes
• Student practices one chosen expectation
• Teacher observes silently
• Give stickers/tokens for strong effort

Set a 2-minute timer. Ask the student to choose one expectation to practice independently (e.g., staying on task). Observe quietly, note successes, and reward them when the timer ends.

Reflection & Goal Setting

• Complete Reflection Worksheet
• Student draws/writes their focus expectation
• Set one specific goal together
• Celebrate goal setting

Hand out the Reflection Worksheet. Ask the student to draw or write which expectation they want to focus on. Help them set one clear goal (e.g., “I will listen with my eyes on the speaker”). Praise their goal.

Great Job!

• High-five for effort!
• Keep practicing your goal every day
• We’ll check in next time

Congratulate the student on their hard work. Remind them to practice their goal in upcoming classes. Explain that next time you’ll check progress and set a new goal.

Script

Be a School Superstar Script

Use this word-for-word script to guide your one-on-one session. Speak slowly, use positive tone, and pause often to let the student respond.

1. Warm-Up Discussion (5 minutes)

Teacher: “Hi there, superstar! I’m so happy to see you today. We’re going to talk about some important school expectations that help us learn and have fun. Can you tell me any rules or expectations we have at school?”
(Pause – wait 5–10 seconds for response.)

If student struggles:
Teacher: “No worries! Some examples are listening when someone talks, following directions, staying on our work, and being kind to others.”

Teacher: “I have some cards here that show those expectations. Let’s look at them one at a time.”

– Show the first card from School Expectations Cards.
Teacher: “This card says Listening. What do you think it means to be a good listener in our classroom?”
(Pause for answer. You might prompt: “Do you keep your eyes on the speaker? Do you sit quietly?”)

– Show the second card.
Teacher: “This one is Following Directions. Can you explain what it means to follow directions?”
(Pause. Prompt: “What happens if we don’t follow directions?”)

– Show the third card.
Teacher: “Here we have Staying on Task. How do you stay focused during your schoolwork?”
(Pause. Prompt: “Do you work quietly? Do you keep your hands on your own paper?”)

– Show the fourth card.
Teacher: “This last card is Respecting Others. What are some ways we can show respect to friends and teachers?”
(Pause. Prompt: “What kind words or actions could we use?”)

Teacher: “Great job telling me what each expectation means! Let’s practice acting them out.”

2. Modeling Expectations (8 minutes)

Teacher: “I’m going to show you exactly how to do each expectation, and then you’ll tell me what you saw. Ready?”

  1. Listening
    – Teacher models: turn body toward imaginary speaker, look with eyes, stay quiet.
Teacher: “I’m listening with my eyes and ears.”
Teacher: “What did you see me do?”
(Pause; praise: “Yes! You noticed I looked right at the speaker and kept quiet.”)

  2. Following Directions
    – Teacher models: pretend teacher says “Put your pencil down.” Teacher acts promptly.
Teacher: “I put my pencil down right away.”
Teacher: “What did I do first?”
(Pause; praise: “Exactly—I did it on the first try!”)

  3. Staying on Task
    – Teacher models: pretend to color, ignores ringing phone or tapping friend.
Teacher: “I kept my brain on my picture.”
Teacher: “What did I ignore so I could stay on task?”
(Pause; praise: “You’re right—I didn’t look at anything else.”)

  4. Respecting Others
    – Teacher models: gently help a partner pick up dropped crayon.
Teacher: “I used gentle hands and said, ‘Here you go!’”
Teacher: “How did I show respect?”
(Pause; praise: “Perfect—I used kind words and gentle hands.”)

Teacher: “You did a great job watching each model. Next, let’s act them out together!”

3. Role-Play Practice (8 minutes)

Teacher: “I’m going to shuffle our Role-Play Scenario Cards. Pick one card, show me, and we’ll practice that scenario together.”
(Shuffle cards and hand them to student.)

Teacher: “Which card did you choose?”
(Student shows card.)

Teacher (reading card): “’[Read scenario aloud].’ Let’s act it out!”
(Perform scenario with student, guiding as needed.)

Teacher: “You did an amazing job. I’m giving you a sticker/token for that!”
(Repeat with 2–3 scenarios, aiming for balanced practice of all expectations.)

4. Independent Application (5 minutes)

Teacher: “Now it’s your turn to shine all by yourself. Choose one expectation to practice, and I’ll set the timer for 2 minutes. Ready?”
(Student chooses and teacher sets timer.)

Teacher: “Go ahead and show me how you can do [student’s choice]. I’ll watch quietly.”
(Observe. Provide silent positive body language.)
(When timer ends, give sticker/token.)

Teacher: “Great effort! You kept your [expectation] super strong.”

5. Reflection and Goal Setting (4 minutes)

Teacher: “Now let’s think about what we did today. Here’s your Reflection Worksheet.”

  1. Teacher: “First, circle the expectation you practiced today.”
    (Wait.)

  2. Teacher: “Next, draw a picture showing you practicing that expectation.”
    (Give 30–45 seconds.)

  3. Teacher: “Now write one thing you will do next time to keep being a School Superstar. Start with ‘I will ___.’”
(Prompt as needed: “I will keep my eyes on the speaker,” etc.)

  4. Teacher: “Don’t forget to fill in today’s date and your name.”

Teacher: “Amazing work! You’re on your way to being a real School Superstar.”

6. Closing (30 seconds)

Teacher: “High five for all your hard work today! Keep practicing your goal in class, and next time we’ll check how you’re doing and set a new goal. You’ve got this!”

End of lesson.
