Game

Safety Relay Race

The Safety Relay Race is an energetic and interactive game designed to actively engage students in practicing and reinforcing key bathroom safety techniques through teamwork and fast-paced challenges.

Game Overview

  • Objective: Work as a team to complete a series of safety challenges as quickly and accurately as possible.
  • Focus: Proper hand washing, safe cleanup of spills, and hazard identification in a simulated bathroom setup.
  • Duration: Approximately 10-15 minutes for the race, integrated as part of the overall 60-minute lesson.

Setup & Materials

  • Prepare stations for each safety task:
    • Station 1: Proper Hand Washing Demonstration
    • Station 2: Safe Cleanup of a Simulated Spill
    • Station 3: Hazard Hunt (Identification of potential risks in a setup)
  • Ensure you have any props or tools needed for demonstrating hand washing (soap, water mockup), cleaning (cloth, mop), and hazard identification (safety markers or images).

Game Instructions

  1. Divide Teams: Split the class into small teams, ensuring each team contains 3-4 students.
  2. Explain Rules: Every team must complete each station's challenge accurately before they can move on to the next station.
  3. Set Stations: Each station will be set up in different areas of the classroom or designated space. The challenges will be completed in a relay format.
  4. Relay Format: One student from the team starts at Station 1 and performs the challenge (e.g., show proper hand washing steps with demonstration). Once completed, they return and tag the next team member at the next station.
  5. Time Keeping: Use a stopwatch to track each team's overall performance. Accuracy and proper technique are more important than speed.
  6. Winning the Game: The first team to successfully complete all stations with correct techniques wins! Optionally, celebrate all participants for practicing essential safety skills.

Follow-Up Discussion

  • Reflection Questions:

    • What did you learn at each station?
    • How can these safety practices help us everyday?
    • How did your team collaborate to finish the relay?
  • Teacher Tips:

    • Encourage students to cheer each other on and offer constructive feedback if needed.
    • Use this activity to assess understanding and correct misconceptions about bathroom safety.

This Relay Race not only reinforces important bathroom safety practices but also builds communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills amongst students. Good luck and have fun in the Safety Relay Race!

Rubric

Challenge Evaluation Rubric

This rubric is designed to help students assess their performance during the Bathroom Safety Olympics. It focuses on three main criteria: Safety Practices, Teamwork and Collaboration, and Reflection & Self-Assessment. Teachers may use this rubric to provide feedback as well as guide student self-reflection.

Criteria

  1. Safety Practices
    • 4 - Excellent: Consistently follows proper safety protocols (e.g., hand washing, safe cleanup, hazard identification) with accurate technique and understanding.
    • 3 - Good: Generally follows safety protocols with minor errors or omissions in technique.
    • 2 - Satisfactory: Demonstrates basic safety practices but with some noticeable errors; occasional lapses in procedure.
    • 1 - Needs Improvement: Frequently does not follow safety protocols; significant errors in technique and understanding.

  1. Teamwork and Collaboration
    • 4 - Excellent: Actively collaborates with teammates, communicates effectively, and assists others to ensure group success.
    • 3 - Good: Works well within the team and communicates effectively most of the time; contributes to group efforts.
    • 2 - Satisfactory: Participates in team activities but may have difficulty with communication or sharing tasks effectively.
    • 1 - Needs Improvement: Rarely contributes to team efforts; shows little communication or collaboration with peers.

  1. Reflection & Self-Assessment
    • 4 - Excellent: Provides detailed and thoughtful reflection on performance; clearly identifies strengths and areas for improvement.
    • 3 - Good: Offers clear reflection, identifying some strengths and weaknesses, though may lack depth in some areas.
    • 2 - Satisfactory: Provides a basic reflection with minimal details; may struggle to articulate areas for improvement.
    • 1 - Needs Improvement: Reflection is superficial or missing key insights; does not effectively identify personal strengths or weaknesses.

Scoring

  • Total Score can be calculated by summing the scores across all criteria. For example, a maximum score is 12 (4+4+4).
  • Teachers should provide specific comments to guide student improvement in each category.

Use this rubric during the Evaluation & Conclusion phase of the Bathroom Safety Olympics to facilitate self-assessment and constructive feedback. Make sure each student understands the expectations and the scoring scale.
