Warm-Up: Sweet Survey (5 minutes)
Teacher: "Good morning/afternoon, everyone! To kick off our lesson today, I have a quick question for you. Think about your favorite cookie. What is it? And why is it your favorite? Maybe it reminds you of something special, or it just tastes amazing! Turn and share with a partner for about a minute, then we'll hear from a few of you."
(Display Baking Up Life Skills Slide Deck - Slide 2: "What's Your Favorite Cookie?")
Teacher: "Alright, who would like to share their favorite cookie and why?"
(Allow 2-3 students to share.)
Teacher: "Wonderful! It sounds like we have a lot of cookie fans in here. Today, we're going to do something super fun: we're going to start baking cookies! But it's not just about the delicious treat at the end. It's about learning some really important life skills that you can use every single day. Skills like following directions, measuring accurately, and working together!"
Recipe Exploration & Safety (10 minutes)
Teacher: "Let's dive into our mission: making Chocolate Chip Cookies! Take a look at our Baking Up Life Skills Slide Deck."
(Display Baking Up Life Skills Slide Deck - Slide 3: "Beyond Delicious: Why Baking Matters" and Slide 4: "Our Secret (Not So Secret!) Recipe")
Teacher: "As you can see, baking helps us with many things: following directions, measuring, kitchen safety, and teamwork. Now, I'm handing out a Recipe Worksheet to everyone. This worksheet goes along with our Recipe Card and will help us understand what we're going to do."
(Distribute Recipe Worksheet and show the Recipe Card.)
Teacher: "First, let's look at the ingredients. On your worksheet, identify the ingredients. Are they wet or dry? Think about what you see on the Recipe Card."
(Give students a few minutes to fill out Part 1 of the worksheet. Review answers as a class.)
Teacher: "Before we touch any ingredients, we HAVE to talk about kitchen safety! It's super important to stay safe while we're cooking. Look at Slide 5."
(Display Baking Up Life Skills Slide Deck - Slide 5: "Kitchen Safety First!")
Teacher: "What are some of these rules, and why are they important?"
(Discuss each point: handwashing, oven safety, raw dough, cleaning spills. Emphasize that the teacher will handle the hot oven.)
Measuring & Mixing (10 minutes)
Teacher: "Now that we know our ingredients and how to stay safe, let's talk about one of the most important skills in baking: measuring! Baking is like a science experiment, and you need to be precise. Look at Slide 6."
(Display Baking Up Life Skills Slide Deck - Slide 6: "The Art of Measuring: Precision is Key!")
Teacher: "How do we measure flour? What about sugar? And vanilla? They are all different! I'm going to demonstrate how to measure dry ingredients like flour – level it off! And how to measure wet ingredients like vanilla – pour it carefully to the line. Now, let's practice!"
(Guide students through measuring each ingredient for the cookie recipe. If in groups, circulate and assist. If demonstrating, invite students up to help add ingredients.)
Teacher: "Once we have all our ingredients measured, it's time to mix it up! Look at Slide 7."
(Display Baking Up Life Skills Slide Deck - Slide 7: "Mixing It Up!")
Teacher: "We'll gently combine our dry and wet ingredients, and then stir in the best part – chocolate chips! Who thinks they can mix gently without making a huge mess? Let's give it a try!"
(Oversee students mixing the dough.)
Cookie Drop & Oven Prep (5 minutes)
Teacher: "Our dough looks amazing! Now, for the final step before baking. We'll take spoonfuls of this delicious dough and place them onto our baking sheets. Make sure to leave a little space between each cookie so they don't stick together. Look at Slide 8."
(Display Baking Up Life Skills Slide Deck - Slide 8: "Almost Ready for the Oven!")
Teacher: "Remember our kitchen safety rules? The oven is hot, so I will be the one to carefully place these baking sheets into the preheated oven. While they bake, we'll do our cool-down, and then we'll enjoy these cookies a bit later!"
(Assist students with placing dough on baking sheets, then carefully place cookies in the oven.)
Cool-Down: What Did We Learn? (5 minutes)
Teacher: "Alright everyone, fantastic work today! Even though the cookies are baking, you've already done the most important part: learning and practicing valuable life skills! Let's finish up with a quick reflection. I'm handing out a Cool Down: Life Skills Baker sheet."
(Distribute Cool Down: Life Skills Baker.)
Teacher: "Look at Slide 9 and think about the questions on your sheet. What is one new thing you learned about baking or kitchen safety today? Take a few minutes to write down your thoughts. This helps us remember what we learned!"
(Display Baking Up Life Skills Slide Deck - Slide 9: "You've Got Skills!")
(Collect the cool-down sheets once students are finished.)
Teacher: "You all did an incredible job today. I'm so proud of your teamwork, your careful measuring, and how well you listened to the safety instructions. These are skills you'll use not just in the kitchen, but in many parts of your life! Great work, junior bakers!"
