Teacher Preparation

10 minutes

Step 1

Engage with a Story

5 minutes

  • Display the first few slides of Class Attendance Story Slides
  • Read or narrate a short scenario about a student who misses school and catches up later
  • Ask: How did missing days affect their learning or friendships?

Step 2

Discuss Why Attendance Matters

7 minutes

  • In a circle, invite students to share one reason coming to school is important
  • Record answers on chart paper under Why Does Coming to School Matter?
  • Highlight themes: learning new things, seeing friends, feeling part of the class

Step 3

Brainstorm Attendance Benefits

5 minutes

  • Divide class into small groups of 3–4
  • Each group lists two benefits of good attendance on a blank slide or paper
  • Groups share one benefit; teacher adds to chart if new

Step 4

Introduce Tracking Tool

7 minutes

  • Hand out the Attendance Tracker Worksheet
  • Show students how to mark each day they attend school
  • Explain sticker rewards: after 5 consecutive days, they earn a sticker
  • Model filling one week’s boxes and placing a sticker

Step 5

Set Goals and Reflect

6 minutes

  • Ask each student to write a simple goal at the bottom of their tracker (e.g., “I will come to school every day this week.”)
  • Pair-share goals with a partner
  • Collect trackers for display and remind students to use stickers as they attend throughout the week.

Slide Deck

Meet Alex

This is Alex. Alex loves reading comics with friends and solving math puzzles in class.

Introduce the story. Engage students by asking if they know someone who’s ever missed school and how it felt.

An Unexpected Sickness

One morning, Alex woke up with a fever and had to stay home for two days to rest.

Explain that sometimes things happen outside our control. Ask: What do you do when you feel sick?

Missing Out on Learning

While Alex was home, the class learned a new math trick for adding big numbers.

Highlight the learning Alex missed. Ask: What do you think the class learned during that time?

Falling Behind Friends

When Alex returned, classmates were excitedly talking about a new playground game Alex had never tried.

Emphasize the social side. Ask: How do you feel when friends talk about games you missed?

Catching Up

Alex spent extra time with the teacher after school to practice the new math trick and learn the playground game rules.

Show how effort helps. Ask: What strategies could Alex use to catch up quickly?

How Could Alex Stay on Track?

What could Alex do next time to keep learning and stay close to friends even if they miss school?

Prompt students to think of solutions. Use this slide to transition to discussion.

Why Does Coming to School Matter?

Coming to school helps us:
• Learn new ideas together
• Share fun moments with friends
• Feel like an important part of our class

Summarize key points of the story. Prepare to record student answers on chart paper.
