Discussion

Session 1 Discussion

Objective: Encourage students to think critically about the impacts of missing school and articulate their thoughts.
Time: 3 minutes
Materials: Discussion Prompt Cards, Whiteboard & Markers
Setup: Students pair up. Each pair receives one Discussion Prompt Card.

Discussion Prompt Cards

Each card contains a question to spark conversation. Distribute one card per pair.

  1. What might happen if you miss school?

  • Tell pairs to discuss their question for 1 minute.
  • After 1 minute, select 2–3 pairs to share a highlight from their conversation.
  • As students share, write key ideas on the whiteboard.

Guiding Questions for Sharing

Use these prompts to guide the whole-class share-out:

  • What was one idea that surprised you about missing school?
  • How do you feel when you’re absent from class?
  • What strategies could help you avoid missing school in the future?

Activity

Attendance BINGO

Objective: Reinforce daily attendance and positive school routines with a fun, game-based tracker.

Time:

  • Introduction: 5 minutes (Session 2)
  • Daily marking: 1 minute at the end of each day or session
  • Weekly check-in: 5 minutes (Session 4)

Materials:

  • Printed Attendance BINGO cards (one per student)
  • Markers, stamps, or stickers
  • Teacher initials or stamps for verification
  • Small rewards or certificates for BINGO winners

Setup:

  1. Print and distribute one unique Attendance BINGO card per student.
  2. Explain that each square represents a positive attendance or routine habit.
  3. Provide each student with a marker or sticker sheet.

How to Play

  1. Daily Review: At the end of each school day (or session), ask students to check which habits they met (e.g., arrived on time, completed homework).
  2. Mark Squares: Students place a marker on each square they’ve achieved. The teacher verifies by initialing or stamping the square.
  3. Aim for BINGO: The goal is to get five marked squares in a horizontal, vertical, or diagonal line by the end of the week.
  4. Celebrate Success: When a student earns BINGO, they:
    • Share which habits helped them succeed.
    • Receive a small reward (sticker, certificate, or verbal praise).
  5. Renew Cards: After a BINGO or at the end of the week, clear cards and reset for the next week’s challenge.

Variation:

  • Class Bingo: Track the whole class by marking a giant BINGO board when every student meets the habit that day. Celebrate group progress.
  • Challenge Mode: Require two BINGOs (horizontal and vertical) for a larger reward at month’s end.

Teacher Notes:

  • Circulate daily to verify students’ self-reports and initial squares.
  • Encourage reflection during weekly check-ins: Which habits were easiest? Which were hardest? How can you support each other?
  • Link BINGO progress to the Attendance Reflection Worksheet goals in later sessions.

Discussion

Session 4 Discussion

Objective: Guide students to reflect on their attendance progress and plan next steps for continued success.
Time: 3 minutes
Materials: Discussion Prompt Cards, Whiteboard & Markers
Setup: Students pair up. Each pair receives one Discussion Prompt Card.

Discussion Prompt Cards

Distribute one card per pair. Each card contains a question to prompt reflection and future planning.

  1. Which strategy made the biggest difference for you this week?
  2. What habit or routine would you like to refine next week?
  3. What obstacle might come up next week, and how will you handle it?
  4. How will you celebrate your small wins to stay motivated?

Procedure

  1. Hand out one Discussion Prompt Card to each pair.
  2. In pairs, students discuss their question for 1 minute.
  3. After 1 minute, invite 2–3 pairs to share a highlight from their conversation.
  4. As students share, jot key ideas and strategies on the whiteboard.

Guiding Questions for Share-Out

Use these to deepen discussion if needed:

  • What surprised you about your partner’s reflection?
  • How can you support each other in refining routines?
  • What simple action can you take tomorrow to move closer to your new goal?

Teacher Notes: Circulate to listen for standout ideas, prompt students to be specific, and affirm each contribution. Encourage a growth mindset by highlighting progress and possibilities for next week.
