Lesson Plan

Art and Fractions

Students will visualize and understand fractions by creating artwork.

Students will create artwork using fractions to divide shapes and colors. This creative lesson helps students visualize fractions while expressing their artistic side. It includes learning about fractions, creating art, and reflecting on the concepts learned.

Audience

7th Grade Students

Time

1 hour

Approach

Students will visualize and understand fractions by creating artwork.

Materials

Colored Paper, Scissors, Glue, Large Drawing Paper or Canvases, Rulers, and Fractions Handout

Step 1

Introduction to Fractions

10 mins

  • Introduce the concept of fractions and how they represent parts of a whole.
  • Provide examples of fractions (1/2, 1/3, 1/4, etc.) using different shapes (circles, squares).
  • Discuss how fractions can be visualized in everyday objects and in art.

Step 2

Explain the Art Activity

5 mins

  • Inform students that they will create an artwork using fractions.
  • Explain that they will divide their drawing paper or canvas into different sections using fractions (e.g., 1/2, 1/4).
  • Mention that each section should be filled with a different color or pattern.

Step 3

Art Creation

35 mins

  • Distribute colored paper, scissors, glue, rulers, and drawing paper/canvases to each student.
  • Guide students as they begin by drawing shapes on their drawing paper or canvas.
  • Ask students to decide how they want to divide their shapes using fractions.
  • Students will cut out shapes from the colored paper and glue them onto their canvas based on their fraction divisions.
  • Circulate the room to provide assistance and ensure understanding.

Step 4

Reflection and Cleanup

10 mins

  • Once artwork is completed, ask students to clean up their work areas.
  • Conduct a reflection session where students share their artwork and describe how they used fractions.
  • Ask questions to reinforce their understanding of fractions (e.g., 'Which part of your artwork is 1/2?', 'How did you decide to divide this shape into 1/4?').

Step 5

Closure

5 mins

  • Summarize the key concepts learned about fractions.
  • Explain how the art activity relates to understanding fractions in a practical way.
  • Distribute the exit ticket survey for students to complete.

Worksheet

Fractions Handout

A document explaining fractions and providing examples to help guide students in creating their fraction-based artwork.

Understanding Fractions

A fraction represents a part of a whole. The top number is called the numerator, and it shows how many parts we have. The bottom number is called the denominator, and it shows how many equal parts the whole is divided into.

Examples

  • 1/2 means one out of two equal parts.
  • 1/3 means one out of three equal parts.
  • 1/4 means one out of four equal parts.

Visualizing Fractions in Shapes

  • Circle: Divide a circle into 2 equal parts to represent 1/2.
  • Square: Divide a square into 4 equal parts to represent 1/4.

Activity Guide

  • Choose a shape (circle, square, rectangle, etc.) and divide it using fractions (1/2, 1/3, 1/4, etc.).
  • Use different colors or patterns for each part.
  • Glue these colored parts onto your drawing paper or canvas.

Be creative and have fun!
