Lesson Plan

An Apple A Day?

Students will be able to identify the parts of an apple and describe its journey from tree to table. They will also learn about the different ways apples are used and consumed.

Understanding where our food comes from helps students appreciate natural cycles, healthy eating, and the journey of food to their plates. It connects them to agriculture and basic plant biology.

Audience

2nd Grade

Time

30 minutes

Approach

Interactive exploration, visual storytelling, and a hands-on activity.

Materials

One whole apple per student (optional, for hands-on exploration), Apple Adventure Slides, My Apple Journey Worksheet, and Apple Facts Discussion Guide

Prep

Prepare Materials

10 minutes

Step 1

Warm-Up: What Do You Know About Apples?

5 minutes

  • Begin by asking students to share what they already know about apples. (e.g., "What color are they? Where do they grow? What do we use them for?")
    * Record their ideas on the board or chart paper.
    * Transition by saying, "Today, we're going on an apple adventure to learn even more!"

Step 2

Introducing the Apple: Parts and Journey

10 minutes

  • Present the Apple Adventure Slides, focusing on the parts of an apple (skin, flesh, core, seeds, stem, leaf) and its growth cycle.
    * Use visuals to illustrate the journey of an apple: from a tiny seed, to a blossom, to a growing fruit on a tree, being picked, and then arriving at the store or our homes.
    * Engage students with questions from the Apple Facts Discussion Guide throughout the presentation to check for understanding and encourage participation.

Step 3

Hands-On Exploration (Optional)

5 minutes

  • If apples are provided, have students carefully examine their apple.
    * Ask them to identify the parts discussed (stem, skin) and predict what they might find inside.
    * (Teacher may cut apples for students to see the core, flesh, and seeds, or skip this step for time/safety).

Step 4

My Apple Journey Worksheet

8 minutes

  • Distribute the My Apple Journey Worksheet.
    * Instruct students to draw or write about the apple's journey or label its parts, based on the lesson.
    * Circulate to provide support and answer questions.

Step 5

Cool-Down: Share and Reflect

2 minutes

  • Ask a few students to share one new thing they learned about apples or one part of the apple's journey they found interesting.
    * Conclude by reiterating the importance of healthy foods like apples and their journey to us.
