This lesson introduces kindergarteners to artistic concepts and creative expression, emphasizing sensory exploration and fine motor development.

Audience

Kindergarten Students

Time

3 sessions of 50 minutes each

Approach

Step-by-step activities with guided creative exploration.

Prep

Pre-Class Preparation

30 minutes

Step 1

Session 1: Introduction to Texture and Letter Play

50 minutes

  • Introduce students to Jasper Johns and relevant artworks using Jasper Johns Art Examples.
  • Discuss texture and how various materials can feel (smooth, rough, bumpy).
  • Engage the class in a letter scavenger hunt using Printed Alphabet Cards and encourage them to touch different texture samples.
  • Wrap up with a group discussion about their favorite textures.

Step 2

Session 2: Color Exploration and Fine Motor Skills

50 minutes

  • Demonstrate basic color mixing using the Color Mixing Guide.
  • Allow the students to experiment with colors by painting on paper while incorporating textures from the prepared texture stations Texture Samples and Craft Supplies.
  • Guide students to mix colors that match their favorite letters from the alphabet cards.
  • Emphasize careful handling of materials to build fine motor skills.

Step 3

Session 3: Creating the Final Jasper Johns Inspired Artwork

50 minutes

  • Combine the learned concepts: texture, color, and the alphabet.
  • Instruct students to create a collage or painting that features a selected letter, using layered textures and mixed colors in a style inspired by Jasper Johns.
  • Provide individual guidance, ensuring each element (letter, texture, color) is thoughtfully incorporated.
  • Conclude with a class gallery walk where students explain their work.

Project Guide

Final Project: Jasper Johns Inspired Art Project

This project is the culmination of our three-session lesson where students explored texture, color, and letters. Building on the techniques learned, each student will create their own artwork inspired by Jasper Johns. The project focuses on creativity, fine motor skills, and the fun of combining different textures, colors, and alphabet elements into a cohesive piece of art.

Project Overview

Project Steps

  1. Review: Begin by reviewing examples from the Jasper Johns Art Examples and the techniques demonstrated throughout the lesson.
  2. Plan: Choose your favorite letter from the Printed Alphabet Cards and decide on a layout that integrates both textured materials and vibrant color combinations.
  3. Create: Using your chosen textures (from our texture stations) and mixed colors, create a collage or painting that highlights your selected letter. Layer the materials to mimic the style of Jasper Johns and ensure that different textures and colors interact harmoniously.
  4. Present: Once completed, participate in a class gallery walk where you will share your artwork with your peers and discuss the textures and colors you applied in your piece.

Assessment & Reflection

  • Self-Assessment: Reflect on the different elements you used – how did texture, color, and your chosen letter come together in your artwork?

  • Peer Assessment: During the gallery walk, share feedback with your classmates. What textures or colors did you find most interesting?

  • Teacher Feedback: Your teacher will provide individual guidance on how well your artwork integrates the concepts of texture, color, and letter use, and suggest improvements for future projects.

We hope this project inspires you to explore new artistic techniques while having fun with textures and colors in your own unique style!

Activity

Texture and Color Exploration Activity

In this activity, you'll get hands-on with different textures and colors to build your sensory skills and creativity. This exploration will help you experiment with materials and set the stage for creating your own Jasper Johns inspired artwork.

Activity Steps

  1. Exploring Textures:

    • Visit the texture station where you can touch and feel different materials such as fabrics, paper, and sandpaper. Describe how each one feels (smooth, rough, bumpy, etc.).

  2. Mixing Colors:

    • Using the color mixing supplies, try combining primary colors to create secondary colors. Refer to our Color Mixing Guide for help.

  3. Connecting Texture and Color:

    • Choose one texture that you really like and mix a color that you think matches the feeling of that texture. For example, a rough texture might pair with a bold color.

  4. Recording Observations:

    • Draw or write (with help from your teacher) a picture of the texture you explored alongside the color you mixed. Share how the texture makes you feel and why you chose that color.

Reflection Questions

  • Which texture did you enjoy the most? Why?

  • What color did you create and how does it reflect the texture you chose?

  • How do you think these experiences can help you when you create your final artwork in the Jasper Johns Inspired Art Project?

Take your time to explore and have fun with the materials! Your discoveries will help you create something amazing in our next art project.
