Final Project: Jasper Johns Inspired Art Project

This project is the culmination of our three-session lesson where students explored texture, color, and letters. Building on the techniques learned, each student will create their own artwork inspired by Jasper Johns. The project focuses on creativity, fine motor skills, and the fun of combining different textures, colors, and alphabet elements into a cohesive piece of art.

Project Overview

• Objective: Create a unique piece of art inspired by Jasper Johns using texture, color, and a chosen letter from the alphabet.
• Materials: Utilize materials from the lesson including Printed Alphabet Cards, Texture Samples and Craft Supplies, Jasper Johns Art Examples, and Color Mixing Guide.
• Focus: Emphasize sensory exploration and fine motor skill development.

Project Steps

1. Review: Begin by reviewing examples from the Jasper Johns Art Examples and the techniques demonstrated throughout the lesson.
2. Plan: Choose your favorite letter from the Printed Alphabet Cards and decide on a layout that integrates both textured materials and vibrant color combinations.
3. Create: Using your chosen textures (from our texture stations) and mixed colors, create a collage or painting that highlights your selected letter. Layer the materials to mimic the style of Jasper Johns and ensure that different textures and colors interact harmoniously.
4. Present: Once completed, participate in a class gallery walk where you will share your artwork with your peers and discuss the textures and colors you applied in your piece.

Texture and Color Exploration Activity

In this activity, you'll get hands-on with different textures and colors to build your sensory skills and creativity. This exploration will help you experiment with materials and set the stage for creating your own Jasper Johns inspired artwork.

Activity Steps

1. Exploring Textures:
   

   • Visit the texture station where you can touch and feel different materials such as fabrics, paper, and sandpaper. Describe how each one feels (smooth, rough, bumpy, etc.).
     
     
     

2. Mixing Colors:
   

   • Using the color mixing supplies, try combining primary colors to create secondary colors. Refer to our Color Mixing Guide for help.
     
     
     

3. Connecting Texture and Color:
   

   • Choose one texture that you really like and mix a color that you think matches the feeling of that texture. For example, a rough texture might pair with a bold color.
     
     
     

4. Recording Observations:
   

   • Draw or write (with help from your teacher) a picture of the texture you explored alongside the color you mixed. Share how the texture makes you feel and why you chose that color.
