  • Introduce the three tasks: sharing, turn-taking relay, and collaborative puzzle.
  • Check prior experience: ask what helps them work well with others.

Step 2

Tier 1: Simple Sharing Task

5 minutes

  • Use the Guided Task Dialogue Script to instruct the student to share 5 colored blocks with you.
  • Prompt the student to announce, “Your turn!” before passing each block.
  • Offer praise for clear communication and willingness to share.

Guided Task Dialogue Script

This script provides word-for-word prompts, questions, and supportive comments for each tiered cooperation task. Teachers should follow the exact phrasing, then adapt praise or next-step prompts based on the student’s responses.


Tier 1: Simple Sharing Task (5 Colored Blocks)

Teacher: “Okay, I have five colored blocks here. We’re going to practice sharing by taking turns. When it’s your turn to give me a block, I’d like you to say, ‘Your turn!’ and then hand it to me. When it’s my turn, I’ll do the same.”

Teacher: “First, I’ll give you a red block. Your turn!”️
(Hand red block to student.)

Possible Student Response: “Your turn!” (Hands a block to the teacher.)

Teacher Praise: “Excellent—nice, clear ‘Your turn!’ and thank you for sharing.”

Teacher Follow-Up: “What helped you remember to say ‘Your turn!’?”



Teacher: “Let’s keep going. I’ll give you the blue block now. Remember: you say ‘Your turn!’ before you hand it back.”

Supportive Reminder (if needed): “It’s okay to look at me and say it loudly.”

Teacher Praise: “Great sharing. You’re doing exactly what we practiced!”



Tier 2: Two-Step Turn-Taking Relay (Beads & Tray)

Teacher: “Now we’ll do a two-step relay. We have this tray of beads. First, one of us puts a bead on the board, then we hand the tray to the other person. Before you hand it over, ask, ‘Ready for my turn?’”

Teacher: “I’ll start by placing one bead.” (Places bead.) “Ready for my turn?” (Hands tray.)

Possible Student Response: “Ready for my turn!” (Student places a bead.)

Teacher Praise: “Nice job waiting until I said ‘Ready for my turn?’ before placing your bead.”

Teacher Follow-Up: “How did you know when it was time to place your bead?”



Teacher: “Your turn to hand it back. Remember to make eye contact and say, ‘Ready for my turn?’”

Supportive Reminder (if needed): “Try looking at my eyes before you ask.”

Teacher Praise: “That was very clear and patient.”

Tier 3: Collaborative Puzzle Challenge (9-Piece Puzzle)

Teacher: “Finally, we have a small puzzle with nine pieces. Let’s plan together which pieces you’ll place and which I’ll place. To start, we’ll share ideas. You can say, ‘I think this piece goes here because…’ Does that make sense?”

Teacher: “I’ll place the corner pieces first. What piece do you want to place?”

Possible Student Response: “I think this piece with red stripes goes here because it matches that side.”

Teacher Acknowledgment: “I like how you explained your idea. That shows great teamwork!”

Teacher Prompt: “Let’s talk about the next piece. Where do you think it should go?”

Supportive Reminder: “We listen when the other person shares an idea.”

Teacher Praise: “Thank you for listening to my suggestion and sharing yours.”
