Materials

Prep

Prepare Materials

10 minutes

  • Print and cut enough copies of the All About Me Card Template for each student
  • Print the Classroom Promise Poster and mount it on the wall or chart paper
  • Gather index cards, colored markers, tape or sticky tack
  • Arrange desks or chairs in a circle for the warm-up activity
  • Review both templates and familiarize yourself with the flow of activities

Step 1

Warm-Up: Name Toss

5 minutes

  • Have students stand or sit in a circle
  • Demonstrate by tossing an imaginary ball, stating your name and one favorite thing (e.g., “I’m Ms. Lenny and I love reading mysteries.”)
  • Students toss an invisible ball to a classmate, share their name and favorite thing
  • Continue until everyone has participated

Step 2

Main Activity: All About Me Gallery Walk

15 minutes

  • Distribute one All About Me Card Template and a marker to each student
  • Students write or draw three favorite things (e.g., hobby, food, book)
  • Once complete, students tape their cards on the classroom wall or board
  • Conduct a gallery walk: students wander, read classmates’ cards, and find at least one peer with a matching interest
  • Invite volunteers to share one match they discovered

Step 3

Co-Creation: Class Promise Creation

7 minutes

  • Introduce the Classroom Promise Poster
  • Prompt students to suggest classroom expectations (e.g., “Listen when others speak,” “Be kind,” “Try your best”)
  • As ideas emerge, record them on the poster
  • Once all suggestions are listed, have students raise hands to vote on their top five promises
  • Highlight the top-voted promises on the poster

Step 4

Cool-Down: Promise Reflection & Share

3 minutes

  • Ask students to silently read the final class promises displayed
  • Invite three volunteers to share which promise they feel is most important and why
  • Affirm the group for setting shared expectations and display the poster as the class agreement
