Prep

Organize and Review Materials

10 minutes

  • Print copies of All About Me Survey for each student.
  • Prepare clipboards and pencils.
  • Create or gather visual cue cards representing survey items.
  • Review the survey questions and visuals to anticipate student needs.

Step 1

Introduction

5 minutes

  • Gather students in a group area or at their desks.
  • Show the cover page of the All About Me Survey.
  • Explain: “Today we’ll share about ourselves so I can learn what you like and how I can help you.”
  • Use visual cue cards to illustrate words like “favorite,” “hobby,” and “me.”

Step 2

Model Survey Completion

5 minutes

  • Display a sample survey on a board or document camera.
  • Fill out example responses aloud (e.g., “My favorite color is blue”).
  • Demonstrate pointing to visuals to choose answers.
  • Check understanding by asking students yes/no questions about the example.

Step 3

Student Survey Completion

15 minutes

  • Distribute the surveys, pencils, and clipboards to each student.
  • Assist students one-on-one as needed, using visuals and simple prompts.
  • Encourage students to point, circle, or draw if writing is difficult.
  • Walk around to offer praise and clarify questions.

Step 4

Share and Wrap-Up

5 minutes

  • Invite volunteers to share one or two answers with the class.
  • Praise all efforts and thank students for sharing.
  • Collect completed surveys for review.
  • Explain that you will use this information to plan future lessons and activities.

Getting to Know Our 7th Grade Scholars with Significant Disabilities

Today we’ll learn about student interests, strengths, and learning preferences so we can build an inclusive community.

Welcome everyone! Today we’ll use this slide deck to guide the first-day “All About Me” survey activity. Use visuals and a friendly tone to set a positive, supportive atmosphere.

Objectives

• Collect students’ interests, strengths, and needs
• Build rapport and foster a supportive classroom environment
• Tailor future lessons and activities based on each learner

Read aloud each objective. Emphasize why knowing students’ preferences matters for instruction and classroom culture.

Materials

All About Me Survey
• Pencils and clipboards
• Visual cue cards (e.g., colors, hobbies, “yes/no” icons)

Show students the materials. Pass around or display one survey copy and visual cue cards so learners recognize them.

Introduction (5 minutes)

  1. Show the cover of the All About Me Survey.
  2. Explain: “Today we’ll share about ourselves so I can learn what you like and how I can help you.”
  3. Use visual cards for words: “favorite,” “hobby,” “me.”

Gather students in a circle or at their desks. Use cue cards when introducing new vocabulary.

Model Survey Completion (5 minutes)

  1. Display a sample survey on the board or camera.
  2. Fill out example responses aloud (e.g., “My favorite color is blue”).
  3. Point to visuals as you choose answers.
  4. Ask students simple yes/no questions about the example.

Model slowly and clearly. Write on a projected survey or whiteboard. Ask yes/no check-in questions to confirm understanding.

Student Survey Time (15 minutes)

  1. Distribute surveys, pencils, and clipboards.
  2. Assist learners individually using visuals and simple prompts.
  3. Encourage pointing, circling, or drawing if writing is hard.
  4. Walk around, offer praise, and clarify questions.

Circulate and offer one-on-one support. Encourage non-writers to draw or point.
Use lots of positive reinforcement.

Share & Wrap-Up (5 minutes)

  1. Ask volunteers to share one or two answers.
  2. Praise every student’s effort.
  3. Collect surveys to review later.
  4. Explain how you’ll use this info to plan future lessons.

Invite volunteers—allow any mode of sharing (verbal, pointing, drawing). Emphasize that all responses are valued.
