Activity

Visual Choice Board

Provide a consistent, low-tech display of icons to support choice making and reduce cognitive load.

Materials Needed

  • Interest Icon Cards (laminated)
  • Magnetic whiteboard or sturdy poster board
  • Velcro dots or magnets
  • Labels or printed category headers (optional)
  • Small container for “My Choices” area

Preparation Steps

  1. Laminate and cut out each icon from the Interest Icon Cards.
  2. Arrange icons on the board by category (Colors, Foods, Activities, Animals, Shapes).
    • Place a small header (e.g., “Colors”) above each group of icons.
    • Affix velcro or magnets to the back of each icon and to the board in a grid layout.
  3. Designate a “My Choices” section at the bottom or side of the board:
    • Attach three larger velcro/magnetic spots labeled 1, 2, and 3.
    • Place a small container nearby for icons the student is considering.
  4. Ensure the board is at the student’s eye level and within easy reach.

How to Use During the Lesson

  1. Invite the student to stand or sit in front of the board.
  2. Model choosing an icon: remove it from the board and place it in the “My Choice 1” spot.
  3. Prompt the student: “Which one do you like best? Show me by moving it here.”
  4. Repeat for Choice 2 and Choice 3, offering verbal or gestural support.
  5. After selections, have the student transfer the three chosen icons to the Student Snapshot Worksheet.
  6. If the student needs to change their mind, they can swap icons back on the board easily.

Note: The tactile action of moving icons can serve as a sensory break and supports fine-motor practice.
