Lesson Plan

All About Me Map

Students will complete an All About Me Map by identifying and illustrating their personal preferences, strengths, and interests—using visual supports to follow each step independently.

Building self-awareness and communication skills helps students trust the learning process and practice following multi-step directions. Visual supports reduce anxiety and increase engagement for learners on the spectrum.

Prep

Prepare Materials

10 minutes

Step 1

Introduction and Warm-Up

5 minutes

  • Show the student the Visual Direction Cards to outline today’s flow: Start → Work → Finish.
  • Explain: “We’ll create a map all about you—your favorites, what you’re good at, and more.”
  • Present the All About Me Map Worksheet and point to the first section.

Step 2

Identifying Preferences

10 minutes

  • Lay out the Preference Icon Cards face-up. Ask the student to choose their favorite food, hobby, and color icons one at a time.
  • For each choice, have them color or draw that icon on the matching section of the worksheet.
  • Use a timer (2–3 minutes per section) and show the Next card when moving forward.
  • Offer praise and concrete feedback: “Great choice of pizza! Let’s color it red.”

Step 3

Exploring Strengths and Interests

10 minutes

  • Prompt the student: “What are you good at or enjoy doing most?”
  • Guide them to draw or write one strength/interest in the designated area of the worksheet.
  • Use keyword prompts (e.g., “math,” “drawing,” “building”) and the Next card to scaffold each response.
  • Encourage use of colors and simple sentences: “I like building blocks.”

Step 4

Wrap-Up and Reflection

5 minutes

  • Show the Finish card and invite the student to look over their completed map.
  • Ask one or two reflection questions: “Which part of your map do you like best?” “How did you feel making this?”
  • Offer enthusiastic praise and display the finished map in a safe, visible spot.
  • Remind the student of today’s steps using the Visual Direction Cards to reinforce sequence following.
