All About Me Map Lesson Plan
Students will create a personalized “All About Me” map using icon cards and structured prompts to share their interests, preferences, and feelings, aiming to strengthen communication, flexible thinking, and social inference skills.
This lesson uses visual supports and clear prompts to help a 6th grader with autism express personal information, practice perspective-taking, and build social confidence through guided, scaffolded interaction.

Prep
Prepare Materials
10 minutes
- Print one copy of the All About Me Map Template for the student
- Print and cut out the Interest Icon Card Set
- Gather colored pencils, dry-erase board and markers, and a visual timer
- Review the template and icon cards to plan prompt questions and social inference supports
Step 1
Introduction and Warm-Up
5 minutes
- Greet the student and explain that you will make an “All About Me” map to share favorite things and feelings
- Show the All About Me Map Template and briefly model how to fill one section using a favorite hobby
- Set the visual timer for each part and explain its use
Step 2
Select Interest Icons
10 minutes
- Lay out the Interest Icon Card Set face up on the table
- Ask the student to choose 4–5 icons that represent favorite activities, foods, or places
- For each icon selected, prompt with questions (e.g., “Why do you like this?”) and write a short label on the map
- Offer sentence starters (e.g., “I like ___ because ___”) to support communication

Add Personal Details
10 minutes
- Invite the student to use colored pencils to draw or write in additional sections (favorite color, music, feelings)
- Encourage flexible thinking by suggesting alternative ways to express an item (drawing vs. writing vs. icons)
- Provide visual or verbal prompts as needed to scaffold choices and self-expression
Step 4
Reflection and Practice
5 minutes
- Review the completed map together and model sharing one item using a full sentence
- Ask the student to practice sharing another item, prompting for social inferences (e.g., “How might a friend respond?”)
- Celebrate the student’s effort and save the map for future group introductions or confidence-building displays

A 30-minute one-on-one activity to help you share your interests, preferences, and feelings.
Welcome the student warmly. Explain that today you’ll create an “All About Me” map to share favorite things and feelings. Use positive, encouraging tone and set a relaxed pace.
Objective

Read aloud the objective. Emphasize the skills we’ll practice: communicating clearly, thinking flexibly, and understanding how others might react.
Materials

Show each material as you name it. Ensure everything is ready and within reach.
Step 1: Introduction & Warm-Up
• Greet the student and explain the activity
• Show the template and model one section using a favorite hobby
• Set the visual timer and explain how it works
Guide the student through a friendly introduction. Model filling one section by choosing your own favorite hobby and describing it.
Step 2: Select Interest Icons
• Lay out the icon cards face up

All About Me Map Teacher Script
Step 1: Introduction & Warm-Up (5 minutes)
Teacher: "Hello [Student Name]! Today we’re going to make an ‘All About Me’ map. This is a fun way to share your favorite things and how you feel. Here’s our All About Me Map Template. I’m going to show you how to fill in the first section."
Teacher (modeling): "First, I’ll write my name. My name is Ms. Lenny." [Writes name] "Now I’ll draw a quick picture of myself playing soccer, because I love soccer." [Draws]
Teacher: "Great! We’ll use our visual timer to keep track of time. I’m going to set it for 10 minutes. When it dings, we’ll move on to picking icons. Ready?"
Step 2: Select Interest Icons (10 minutes)
Teacher: "Here are our Interest Icon Card Set. Please pick 4 or 5 cards that show things you really like."
[Give student time to choose]
Teacher: "Which card would you like first?"
[Wait]
Teacher: "You chose the [icon]. That’s awesome! Why do you like this?"

Teacher: "Next, let’s add more about you. First, your favorite color. You can write the color name or draw it."
