Lesson Plan

All About Me Lesson Plan

In this 30-minute Tier 1 community-building lesson, all students will complete an “All About Me” worksheet to share interests and goals, then collaborate to establish inclusive classroom norms.

Tier 1 universal supports ensure every student feels welcomed and engaged. Explicit differentiation and inclusive practices build a strong classroom culture, promoting equity and belonging from day one.

Prep

Prepare Materials for Tier 1 Implementation

10 minutes

  • Print one All About Me Worksheet per student, plus 2–3 extra copies for emergent needs
  • Gather name tags, colored markers, poster paper, and visuals (e.g., example posters of norms)
  • Prepare sentence frames and graphic organizers for English learners and students needing additional support
  • Review grouping strategies to ensure heterogeneous pairs (mix of abilities, language levels)
  • Post an anchor chart area for norms and have sticky notes or symbols ready

Step 1

Icebreaker: Name & Favorite

5 minutes

  • Distribute name tags and markers; model writing your name and favorite hobby with a picture or word (visual support)
  • Provide sentence starters (e.g., “My name is ___. I like ___.”) on the board for scaffolding
  • Invite each student to write/draw and briefly share with a neighbor (flexible grouping for peer support)
  • Use think-pair-share to activate all voices; circulate to affirm contributions

Step 2

Complete All About Me Worksheet

15 minutes

  • Hand out the All About Me Worksheet
  • Offer options: writing, drawing, or verbally dictating responses to a scribe
  • Encourage use of provided graphic organizers and sentence frames (e.g., “I am good at ___ because ___.”)
  • Circulate to prompt deeper thinking, check comprehension, and support diverse learners with visuals or simplified language

Step 3

Pair Share

7 minutes

  • Organize heterogeneous pairs to balance skills and language proficiency
  • Provide active listening sentence frames: “I heard that you ___.” “Tell me more about ___.”
  • Each student shares one interesting fact; partner practices listening cues (nod, eye contact)
  • Invite 2–3 volunteers to share a peer’s highlight, reinforcing mutual respect and engagement

All About Me

Welcome to 5th grade!
Building community and classroom expectations together.

Welcome students. Introduce yourself and explain that today we’re getting to know each other and setting our classroom norms. Keep energy high and encourage participation.

Today's Agenda

  1. Icebreaker: Name & Favorite
  2. Complete All About Me Worksheet
  3. Pair Share
  4. Classroom Norms Discussion

Briefly walk through each item so students know what to expect. Keep this slide to about 1 minute.

Icebreaker: Name & Favorite

• Write your name on a name tag
• Draw or write your favorite hobby or interest
• Share quickly with a neighbor

Distribute name tags and markers. Model your own example first (e.g., name + favorite game or sport). Then invite students to write and draw.

Complete the Worksheet

All About Me Worksheet
• Fill in: Interests, Strengths, Family, Goals for this year
• Ask questions to add detail

Hand out the All About Me Worksheet. Remind students to fill in each section and that there are no wrong answers. Circulate to support.

Pair Share

• Swap worksheets with your partner
• Each share one interesting fact you wrote
• Practice active listening (nod, ask a follow-up question)
• Volunteers share highlights with the class

Pair students up. Model one partner sharing while the other listens. Emphasize eye contact and active listening.

Classroom Norms Discussion

• What helps you feel respected and supported?
• Record ideas on poster paper
• Agree on 3–5 key norms (e.g., Listen, Be Kind, Ask Questions)
• Display our Norms Poster

Record student ideas quickly on chart paper. Guide them to agree on 3–5 easy-to-follow norms. Write them clearly and post the poster.

Next Steps

• Norms poster stays up all week
• Use norms in every class activity
• Get excited for our next lesson!

Thank everyone for participating. Remind students to review norms each day and get ready for our first lesson tomorrow.
