AI Word Challenge Lesson Plan

Students will be able to define key AI vocabulary terms by successfully completing a crossword puzzle and participating in a class discussion.

Step 1

Introduction & Warm Up (5 minutes)

Begin with the AI Vocabulary Warm Up activity.
- Ask students to share their initial thoughts on 'Artificial Intelligence.'
- Introduce the lesson's objective: learning key AI vocabulary through a fun challenge.

Step 2

Vocabulary Introduction & Crossword Instructions (5 minutes)

5 minutes

Use the AI Word Challenge Slide Deck and AI Word Challenge Script to briefly introduce some of the key AI terms.
- Explain the rules of the AI Vocabulary Crossword Puzzle. Emphasize working individually or in pairs to figure out the definitions based on the clues.

Crossword Puzzle Activity (15 minutes)

Distribute the AI Vocabulary Crossword Puzzle to each student.
- Circulate around the room to offer assistance and answer questions as students work on the puzzle.
- Encourage students to use context clues and their understanding of new terms.

Artificial Intelligence is all around us! From recommending movies to helping us search for information, AI is a technology that mimics human intelligence.

Briefly explain that AI is a big topic and we'll be learning some important words.

Crossword Challenge: How To Play!

You'll get a puzzle with clues.
- Each clue is a definition for an AI word.
- Fill in the words to complete the puzzle!
- Work carefully and think about the meaning of each word.

AI Word Challenge Script

Teacher: "Good morning, everyone! Today, we're going to dive into the exciting world of Artificial Intelligence. You might have heard about AI in movies, games, or even when you ask a smart speaker for help. But what exactly is it, and what are some of the important words we need to know?

Let's start with a quick warm-up. On your own, I want you to quickly jot down or think about: What comes to mind when you hear 'Artificial Intelligence'? Don't worry about being right or wrong, just your first thoughts!"

(Give students about 1-2 minutes to think or jot down ideas. Call on a few students to share.)

Teacher: "Great ideas, everyone! You've got some good starting points. Today, our goal is to learn and define some key AI vocabulary terms, and we're going to do it with a fun crossword puzzle! This will help us better understand how AI works and how it impacts our lives.

I'm going to hand out a crossword puzzle. The clues for the puzzle are actually the definitions of important AI words. Your job is to read the definition, think about the AI term it describes, and fill it into the puzzle. Work on your own, or quietly with a partner. If you get stuck, think about what we've already discussed and look for context clues!"

(Distribute the AI Vocabulary Crossword Puzzle. Allow students 10-15 minutes to work.)

Teacher: "Alright, future AI experts! Pencils down for a moment. Let's go over some of these answers together. Who would like to share their answer for Across #1? How about Down #3?"

(Use the AI Vocabulary Crossword Answer Key to go through the answers. Encourage students to explain their reasoning for choosing certain words.)

Teacher: "Fantastic work today, everyone! You've tackled some pretty complex words. To wrap up, for our cool-down, please think about this: What was one new AI term you learned today, and why might it be important in your life or in the world around you?"

(Allow students 2-3 minutes to write or think, then ask for a few volunteers to share their reflections.)

Teacher: "Excellent reflections! It's clear you're starting to build a strong foundation for understanding AI. Keep an eye out for these terms, and you'll notice them more and more in the world. Great job today!"
