AI as Your Co-Pilot

Smart Tools for Smart Students

  • What is AI?
  • How can AI help you in school and beyond?
  • Using AI responsibly and ethically.

Welcome students and introduce the exciting topic of AI. Ask them what they already know or think about AI to gauge their prior knowledge and spark curiosity. Explain that today, they will learn how AI can be a helpful 'co-pilot' in their schoolwork and creative endeavors, but it's important to use it wisely.

Meet Your Co-Pilot: Artificial Intelligence

What is AI?

  • Artificial Intelligence (AI): Technology that allows computers to perform human-like tasks.
  • Your Co-Pilot: AI helps you fly through tasks, but you're still the pilot!
  • Everyday Examples: Voice assistants (Siri, Alexa), recommendation engines (Netflix, YouTube), facial recognition.

Introduce the concept of AI as a tool, not a replacement for human thought. Emphasize that it's a 'co-pilot' – it assists, but the human is always in control. Briefly explain what AI is in simple terms (e.g., computer programs that can learn and solve problems).

AI for Academic Research

Boost Your Brainpower!

  • Brainstorming Ideas: Stuck on a topic? AI can suggest new angles.
  • Summarizing Information: Quickly get the main points from long articles.
  • Finding Keywords: Identify important terms for better search results.
  • Outlining Papers: Organize your thoughts with AI-generated structures.

Remember: Always verify information and use AI as a guide, not a source!

Discuss how AI can be a powerful assistant in academic research. Provide examples like quickly summarizing articles, finding keywords, or generating initial research questions. Stress that AI is a starting point, and critical evaluation of its output is essential.

AI for Creative Projects

Unleash Your Inner Artist!

  • Story Prompts: Need an idea for a short story or poem?
  • Character Development: AI can help you create unique characters.
  • Creative Writing Styles: Experiment with different tones and voices.
  • Image Generation (brief mention): Imagine an AI creating art from your words!

Pro Tip: AI helps start, but your creativity makes it shine!

Shift the focus to creative projects. Explain how AI can help overcome creative blocks, generate unique ideas, or even assist in writing. Provide examples like generating story prompts, character ideas, or different writing styles. Encourage students to think outside the box.

AI for Problem-Solving

Solve Like a Super-Thinker!

  • Breaking Down Problems: AI can help identify steps to solve a challenge.
  • Generating Solutions: Explore multiple approaches to a problem.
  • Learning New Skills: Get explanations and examples for tough concepts.

Key: AI offers perspectives, but you make the final decisions!

Introduce the concept of AI for problem-solving. This could involve using AI to break down complex problems, suggest different solutions, or even help with coding beginners. Keep it high-level for now, as practical applications will be explored in the activity.

Using AI Responsibly: The Ethical Co-Pilot

Think Smart, Act Right

  • Bias: AI can sometimes be unfair because of the data it learned from.
  • Plagiarism: Copying AI-generated text without proper citation is still cheating!
  • Misinformation: AI can sometimes produce incorrect or made-up information. Always check!
  • Privacy: Be careful what personal information you share with AI tools.

Your Role: Be critical, be honest, be responsible.

This is a critical slide. Initiate a discussion on the ethical implications of AI. Ask students about potential pitfalls they foresee. Guide the conversation to topics like bias, misinformation, and the importance of citing sources and avoiding plagiarism. Connect this to their AI Literacy Worksheet where these points are elaborated.

Your AI Co-Pilot Rules

How to Be a Responsible AI User

  1. Be Critical: Don't believe everything AI says. Fact-check!
  2. Be Transparent: If you use AI, mention it.
  3. Be Creative: Use AI to inspire, not to replace your own ideas.
  4. Be Ethical: Understand the impact of AI and use it for good.

You are the expert! AI is just your helpful assistant.

Summarize the ethical guidelines. Reinforce that AI is a tool to augment, not replace, human intelligence. Emphasize that their critical thinking, creativity, and ethical judgment are more important than ever. Prepare them for the upcoming project where these principles will be applied.

Project Guide

AI Enhanced Research Challenge

Project Goal

To explore and apply Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools to enhance your academic research or creative projects, while understanding and practicing ethical usage.

Your Mission

You will choose one of the following project types and use AI tools as your "co-pilot" to assist you in various stages of the project. Remember, you are the pilot, and AI is your assistant.

Project Options:

  1. Research Deep Dive: Choose a topic from a subject area (e.g., Science, History, Literature) and conduct research. Use AI to help you:

    • Brainstorm research questions.
    • Summarize key articles or texts.
    • Generate an outline for your research paper/presentation.
    • Identify important keywords for further searching.
  2. Creative Storytelling: Develop a short story, poem, or script. Use AI to help you:

    • Brainstorm plot ideas or themes.
    • Develop unique characters.
    • Suggest different writing styles or tones.
    • Generate creative prompts to overcome writer's block.

Project Steps

Step 1: Choose Your Path (Day 1-2)

  • Decide whether you will do a Research Deep Dive or Creative Storytelling project.
  • Select a specific topic or idea within your chosen path.
  • AI Co-Pilot Use: You can use an AI tool to brainstorm initial topic ideas if you are stuck.

Step 2: Planning with Your Co-Pilot (Day 3-5)

  • For Research Deep Dive:
    • Use an AI tool to generate 3-5 potential research questions related to your topic.
    • Select your favorite question and use AI to create a basic outline for a 3-5 paragraph essay or a short presentation.
  • For Creative Storytelling:
    • Use an AI tool to generate 3-5 plot ideas or character concepts for your chosen story idea.
    • Select your favorite and use AI to create a basic outline or a character profile for your story.

Step 3: Drafting & Refining (Day 6-8)

  • For Research Deep Dive:
    • Start drafting your essay or presentation. Use AI to summarize 1-2 short articles or explain complex concepts related to your topic. Crucially, you must verify the information and cite any sources you use.
    • Ethical Check: Ensure you are not plagiarizing AI-generated content. Use it for inspiration and information gathering, but write your own sentences.
  • For Creative Storytelling:
    • Begin writing your story, poem, or script. Use AI to generate alternative phrasing for sentences, suggest descriptive words, or provide different narrative arcs. Your unique voice must be central to the work.
    • Ethical Check: Ensure your creative work still reflects your own ideas and effort, even with AI assistance.

Step 4: Reflection & Presentation (Day 9-10)

  • Prepare to present your project (a short overview, not the full paper/story) and discuss your experience using AI. You will share:
    • Your chosen project type and topic.
    • Specific AI tools you used and how you used them (e.g., "I used AI to brainstorm 5 research questions").
    • What worked well with AI and what challenges you faced.
    • How you ensured ethical use (e.g., fact-checking, avoiding plagiarism, maintaining your own voice).
  • Submit your completed project along with a short reflection on your AI usage.

Deliverables

  1. Completed Research Paper (3-5 paragraphs) OR Creative Piece (short story/poem/script).
  2. Project Reflection (1-2 paragraphs): Detail which AI tools you used, how they helped, challenges encountered, and how you ensured ethical use (refer to the AI Literacy Worksheet for ethical guidelines).
  3. Short Presentation (3-5 minutes): Share your project and reflect on your AI co-pilot experience.

Assessment

Your project will be assessed using the AI Project Success Rubric, focusing on your project's content, your use of AI as a co-pilot, and your demonstration of ethical AI practices.
