Lesson Plan

Aftermath: Guilt & Growth

Students will be able to analyze how characters are processing a range of complex feelings, guilt, and responsibility in chapters 20-21; identify potential coping strategies and responsible decision-making steps; and understand the concepts of self-forgiveness, personal growth, and the impact of actions on relationships.

Understanding how characters deal with difficult and complex emotions like guilt and responsibility, apply coping skills, and make responsible decisions helps students develop empathy, emotional regulation, critical thinking, and a deeper understanding of human behavior and consequences in literature and their own lives. It also helps them connect character experiences to their own personal responsibilities and relationships.

Prep

Teacher Preparation

15 minutes

Step 1

Warm-Up: Quick Write

5 minutes

  • Display the warm-up prompt from the Aftermath: Guilt & Growth Slide Deck.
  • Instruct students to write for 3 minutes on the prompt: "Think about a time someone in a story made a mistake. How did they feel afterward? What did they do?"

Step 2

Read & Discuss Chapters 20-21

10 minutes

  • Read aloud or have students silently read Chapters 20-21 of the class novel.
  • Facilitate a class discussion using the updated Discussion Questions Ch. 20-21. Encourage students to refer to specific text evidence when sharing their ideas and to practice active listening.
  • Guide students to identify instances of characters feeling a range of complex emotions, taking responsibility, struggling with their actions, and considering problem-solving or coping strategies.

Step 3

Tableau Activity: Key Scenes

10 minutes

  • Divide students into small groups.
  • Assign each group a key scene from Chapters 20-21 that demonstrates a character dealing with guilt, responsibility, or other complex emotions.
  • Instruct groups to create a frozen "picture" (tableau) of their scene, showing the character's emotions and actions without speaking.
  • Circulate to assist groups and ensure they are focusing on the emotional aspects and potential consequences of the scenes.

Step 4

Share Out and Reflection

5 minutes

  • Have each group present their tableau to the class.
  • After each presentation, ask the class: "What emotions do you see? What do you think the character is thinking or feeling? How might their actions impact others?"
  • Distribute Reflection Journal Pages and instruct students to complete the prompts individually as a cool-down activity, reflecting on the characters' journeys, their own understanding of complex emotions, responsibility, coping, and personal growth.

Warm-Up: Quick Write

Think about a time someone in a story made a mistake. How did they feel afterward? What did they do?

Welcome students and introduce the warm-up activity. Explain that this is a silent writing exercise.

Chapters 20-21: The Aftermath

Today, we're diving into chapters 20-21. Pay close attention to how the characters react to recent events. Beyond guilt, what other feelings are they experiencing? Who takes responsibility, and how do their choices impact others?

Remind students of the previous chapters' events to set the context for chapters 20-21. Emphasize the themes of complex emotions, guilt, and responsibility, and how characters respond to challenges.

Discussion: Emotions, Responsibility & Growth

Let's discuss how characters are handling the consequences of their actions and growing from their experiences.

  • What complex emotions are characters feeling and why?
  • How are characters showing responsibility or making new choices?
  • What coping strategies are they using or could they use?
  • How do their actions affect their relationships with others?

Display the main discussion questions. Encourage active participation, active listening, and refer students to the updated Discussion Questions Ch. 20-21 handout. Guide them to consider a range of emotions, decision-making, and relationship impacts.

Tableau Activity: Picture This!

In small groups, you will choose a key scene from chapters 20-21.

Create a frozen picture, or 'tableau,' to show a character dealing with guilt, responsibility, or other strong emotions. Focus on their emotions and what their actions might be communicating!

Explain the tableau activity. Model an example if necessary. Emphasize showing a range of emotions and the consequences of actions through body language.

Reflect & Share: Growing from Experience

Present your group's tableau.

Class, what emotions do you see? What do you think the character is feeling? How might their actions impact others?

Afterward, complete your Reflection Journal Pages to process your thoughts on emotions, responsibility, coping, and personal growth.

Guide the class through the share-out, facilitating discussion after each tableau. Introduce the journal reflection as a cool-down. Distribute Reflection Journal Pages and highlight that the prompts cover coping, self-forgiveness, and personal growth.

Discussion

Discussion Questions: Chapters 20-21 - Dealing with the Aftermath and Growing Stronger

Take turns discussing these questions with your group or as a class. Remember to support your answers with evidence from the text and listen actively to your classmates' ideas.

Understanding Complex Emotions

  1. Besides guilt, what other feelings might the characters in Chapters 20-21 be experiencing (e.g., sadness, regret, anger, fear, confusion)? Point to specific parts of the story that show these emotions.

  2. How do these complex feelings affect a character's thoughts, words, or actions in these chapters?

  3. Think about a time someone in a story expressed a range of feelings after a mistake. What different emotions did they show?

Taking Responsibility & Making Good Choices

  1. Which character takes responsibility for their actions in these chapters? What do they do or say to show this?

  2. Consider the decisions characters made that led to feeling guilty. What steps could they have taken to make safer or healthier choices? (Think about problem-solving steps like identifying the problem, brainstorming solutions, thinking about consequences).

  3. How might peer influence have played a role in the characters' actions or their reactions to what happened?

Moving Forward, Coping, and Self-Forgiveness

  1. What strategies do characters (or could they) use to cope with difficult emotions like guilt or regret? (e.g., talking to someone, making amends, planning for the future).

  2. Do you see any signs that a character is trying to forgive themselves or others? Explain your answer. What does "self-forgiveness" mean in the context of their journey?

  3. What lessons do you think the characters are learning about making mistakes and growing from them?

Relationship Skills & Empathy

  1. How do the characters' actions and their feelings of guilt or responsibility affect their relationships with other characters?

  2. How can characters demonstrate respect for others' personal opinions or ideas, especially when there's disagreement or different feelings about an event?

  3. When we discuss, we practice active listening. What does active listening look like and sound like, and how does it help us understand others' feelings, even when they're complex?

Self-Awareness & Personal Responsibility

  1. What kind of "self-talk" do you imagine a character who is feeling guilty might have? How could positive self-talk help them move forward?

  2. How do the characters' responsibilities in the story relate to the personal responsibilities you might have at home or at school? What are the benefits of reflecting on your roles and responsibilities?

Journal

Reflection Journal: Dealing with the Aftermath and Growing Stronger

Name: ________________________
Date: _________________________

Think about the characters in Chapters 20-21 and their experiences with difficult emotions, responsibility, and growth. Use these prompts to reflect on what we discussed and learned today.

Prompt 1: Character's Complex Feelings & Inner Voice

Choose one character from Chapters 20-21. Besides guilt, what other complex emotions (like sadness, regret, frustration, or fear) do you think they were feeling? Describe what they did or said that showed these feelings. What kind of "self-talk" do you imagine this character might have had after their actions? How do you think this self-talk helped or hurt them?

Prompt 2: Choices, Responsibility, and Relationships

Think about a character who had to make a difficult choice or deal with the consequences of one. What steps could they have used for better problem-solving or decision-making? What was the outcome of their choice for themselves and for their relationships with others? What is the benefit of taking responsibility, not just for yourself, but for maintaining healthy relationships?

Prompt 3: Coping, Self-Forgiveness, and Personal Growth

We discussed how characters might move forward after making mistakes. What coping strategies did a character use, or what strategies could they use to handle their difficult emotions? What does "self-forgiveness" mean to you, and how can a character, or even a real person, practice self-forgiveness and learn from their mistakes to grow? How does this growth show they are becoming more self-aware and capable?
