ADHD and Impulsivity Skills Series

Understanding ADHD & managing impulsivity

This lesson series introduces 5th graders to ADHD and strategies for managing impulsivity. Through experiential, game-based, and cooperative learning, students will engage in activities that help them understand ADHD and develop skills to manage impulsive behaviors. This series is crucial for fostering empathy and equipping students with practical skills to improve their social and academic interactions.

Step 1

Introduction to ADHD

  • Begin with a brief discussion on what students know about ADHD.
  • Introduce ADHD as a common condition that affects focus and behavior.
  • Show the Short Film: Jack and Jill Have ADHD to provide a narrative understanding of ADHD.
  • Use a simple analogy to explain how ADHD can impact daily activities.

Step 2

Understanding Impulsivity

20 mins

  • Discuss what impulsivity means and how it can affect decision-making.
  • Share examples of impulsive behaviors in a school setting.
  • Engage students in a role-play activity to demonstrate impulsivity.

Step 3

Strategies to Manage Impulsivity

20 mins

  • Introduce strategies such as 'Stop and Think' and 'Count to Ten'.
  • Use a worksheet to practice these strategies in different scenarios.
  • Encourage students to share their own strategies.

Step 4

Game-Based Learning

  • Play a game that requires students to practice impulse control, such as 'Simon Says'.
  • Use printable cards with different scenarios where students must decide the best action.
