Lesson Plan

Addition Exit Ticket

Students will be able to solve basic addition problems within 10 using physical counters and record their answers.

This lesson helps students develop foundational addition skills, which are crucial for future mathematical understanding. It also provides teachers with a quick assessment of student comprehension.

Audience

Kindergarten

Time

5 minutes

Approach

Hands-on problem-solving with counters followed by recording answers.

Materials

Small set of counters (10 per student), and Addition Exit Ticket

Prep

Prepare Materials

10 minutes

  • Review the Addition Exit Ticket and make copies for each student.
  • Gather a small set of counters (e.g., 10 per student).

Step 1

Distribute Materials

1 minute

  • Hand out one Addition Exit Ticket to each student.
  • Give each student a small set of 10 counters.

Step 2

Explain Activity

1 minute

  • Say to students: “Today, we’re going to do a quick activity to see how well you understand adding numbers. You will each get an exit ticket with an addition problem and some counters. Your job is to use the counters to solve the problem on your exit ticket.”
  • Show the students the Addition Exit Ticket and point to where they will write their answer.

Step 3

Solve Problems

2 minutes

  • Instruct students: “Use your counters to help you solve the problem on your exit ticket. Once you have the answer, write it in the box.”
  • Circulate around the room to observe students' strategies and provide support as needed.

Step 4

Collect Tickets

1 minute

  • Once students have completed their problems, instruct them to put their counters away and turn in their Addition Exit Ticket as they leave.

Slide Deck

Time for a Quick Math Check!

Let's see what we know about adding numbers!

Welcome students and introduce the concept of a quick math check. Explain that today's activity is a way to see how well they understand addition.

Your Mission:

  1. Get your counters and your exit ticket.
  2. Use your counters to solve the addition problem.
  3. Write your answer in the box.
  4. Turn in your ticket when you're done!

Explain the instructions clearly. Emphasize using counters to solve the problem and then writing the answer in the box. Show an example if needed (not on the slide, but verbally).
