Adding It Up! Day 1: Blocks to the Rescue!
Today, we're going to become Addition Architects!
Welcome students and introduce the day's lesson. Briefly mention that we'll be reviewing addition and learning a new way to add big numbers!
Warm-Up: Ready, Set, Add!
Let's get our math brains warmed up!
- 3 + 2 = ?
- 5 + 4 = ?
- 6 + 1 = ?
- 7 + 3 = ?
- 2 + 8 = ?
Explain that this is a quick warm-up to get their brains ready. Guide them to complete the problems on their warm-up sheet.
Our Goal Today
I can represent and solve addition problems.
I can use a variety of strategies to add a two-digit number to a multiple of ten using base ten blocks.
Read the objective aloud and simplify it for students. Emphasize that 'strategies' are like different tools in our math toolbox.
I Do: Adding with Base Ten Blocks
Let's add 24 + 10!
- First, I show 24. (2 tens, 4 ones)
- Then, I show 10. (1 ten, 0 ones)
- Now, I put all the tens together. (2 tens + 1 ten = 3 tens)
- Then, I put all the ones together. (4 ones + 0 ones = 4 ones)
- What number did I make? 3 tens and 4 ones make 34!
Introduce the concept using base ten blocks. Explain that 'tens' are like towers and 'ones' are like tiny blocks. Show 24 and 10 with physical blocks or drawing.
We Do: Adding 32 + 20
Let's try one together!
- How would you show 32 with your blocks?
- How would you show 20 with your blocks?
- Count your tens together. How many do you have?
- Count your ones together. How many do you have?
- What's our new number?
Guide students to replicate this with their own blocks. Ask questions like, 'How many tens do we start with in 32?' or 'How many ones are in 20?'
We Do: Adding 15 + 30
One more together!
- Show 15.
- Show 30.
- Add the tens.
- Add the ones.
- What's the sum?
Another guided example. Encourage students to explain their steps.
You Do: Teamwork Addition!
Now it's your turn to be Addition Architects with your group!
- Work together with your team.
- Use your base ten blocks to solve the problems on your worksheet.
- Record your answers. Don't forget to help each other!
Transition to the small group activity. Explain that they will work together with their blocks and worksheet.

Day 1 Script: Adding It Up!
Warm-Up: Ready, Set, Add! (5 minutes)
"Good morning, mathematicians! Today we're going to dive into some awesome adding. First, let's get our brains warmed up with a quick review! I'm passing out a Day 1 Warm-Up sheet. On it, you'll see five addition problems. Take about 5 minutes to solve them quietly on your own. Do your best!"
(Allow students to complete the warm-up. Circulate and observe.)
"Alright, pencils down! Let's quickly go over these. Who wants to tell me the answer to 3 + 2? Yes, [Student Name]? Great, 5! How about 5 + 4? [Student Name]? Perfect, 9! Let's continue. 6 + 1 is 7, 7 + 3 is 10, and 2 + 8 is 10. Fantastic job everyone! You're already showing your amazing addition skills!"
Introduction: Adding with Tens (I Do - 5 minutes)
"Today, we have two big goals! Our first goal is to keep practicing how to solve addition problems. And our second goal is super exciting: we're going to learn how to add a two-digit number to a multiple of ten using special blocks called base ten blocks! Look at our Day 1 Slide Deck to see our goals."
"Why is this important? Because understanding how numbers combine helps us with so many things, like counting how many crayons you have or how many snacks are left! It's like being a number detective!"
"Okay, watch me first. This is the 'I Do' part, so your eyes should be on me! I want to add 24 + 10. I'm going to use my base ten blocks. These long sticks are 'tens' and these little squares are 'ones.'"
"First, I need to show the number 24. That's two tens sticks and four little ones blocks. One, two tens. One, two, three, four ones. There's 24."
"Now, I need to add 10 to it. The number 10 is one tens stick and zero ones blocks. So I'll just grab one more tens stick."
"Now, to find my total, I put all the tens together and all the ones together. Let's count the tens: One, two, three tens. And let's count the ones: One, two, three, four ones."
"So, I have 3 tens and 4 ones. What number does that make? Yes, 34! So, 24 + 10 = 34! See how easy it is to add the tens together?"
Guided Practice: Let's Add Together! (We Do - 10 minutes)
"Now it's time for the 'We Do' part, which means we're going to do it together! You should all have your own base ten blocks. Let's try adding 32 + 20."
"First, everyone show me 32 with your blocks. How many tens sticks should you have? Show me! [Pause for students to show 3 tens] Excellent! How many ones blocks? [Pause for students to show 2 ones] Perfect!
"Now, we need to add 20 to that. How many tens sticks is in 20? [Pause for response] Yes, two tens! So, add two more tens sticks to your collection. How many ones blocks are in 20? [Pause for response] That's right, zero!"
"Now, let's put all our tens together and all our ones together. Count your tens out loud with me! One, two, three, four, five tens! And how many ones do we have? Two ones!"
"So, 5 tens and 2 ones. What number is that? [Pause for response] You got it, 52! So, 32 + 20 = 52! You're doing great!"
"Let's try one more together! How about 15 + 30. Everyone, show me 15 with your blocks. [Pause for students to show 1 ten, 5 ones]
"Now, add 30. How many tens sticks do you need to add for 30? [Pause for response] Three tens! Add them to your group. How many ones for 30? [Pause for response] Zero!"
"Count all your tens now. How many? [Pause] Four tens! And how many ones? [Pause] Five ones!"
"Four tens and five ones makes...? [Pause] 45! Amazing! 15 + 30 = 45."
Small Group Activity: Block Building Addition (You Do - 30 minutes)
"You are all becoming master block builders! Now it's time for the 'You Do' part. I'm going to divide you into small groups. Each group will get a Day 1 Worksheet and you'll work together using your base ten blocks to solve the problems."
"Remember to talk to your group members, help each other, and make sure everyone understands how to use the blocks to find the answer. When you find the answer, write it on your worksheet."
"I'll be walking around to help anyone who needs it. Let's get to it!"

Our Goal Today
I can represent and solve addition problems.
I can use quick pictures (tens sticks and ones dots) to add a two-digit number to a multiple of ten.
Read the objective clearly. Connect quick pictures to the base ten blocks they used yesterday.
I Do: Quick Picture Addition
Let's add 35 + 20 using quick pictures!
- First, I draw 35: ### (3 tens sticks) ... (5 ones dots)
- Then, I draw 20: ## (2 tens sticks)
- Now, I count all my tens sticks. How many? 5 tens!
- Then, I count all my ones dots. How many? 5 ones!
- 5 tens and 5 ones make 55! So, 35 + 20 = 55!
Model drawing quick pictures for 35 + 20. Draw clearly on the board/projector. Emphasize drawing tens sticks and ones dots.
We Do: Let's Draw 42 + 10
Now, let's try 42 + 10 together on your dry-erase boards!
- First, draw 42.
- Then, draw 10.
- Count your tens and ones.
- What number do you get?

Day 2 Script: Adding It Up!
Warm-Up: More Adding Fun! (5 minutes)
"Welcome back, Addition Architects! You all did such a fantastic job yesterday using your base ten blocks. Today, we're going to keep building on that!
Let's start with a quick warm-up on your Day 2 Warm-Up sheet. There are five problems. Some are simple additions like yesterday, and some will ask you to think about adding tens, just like we did with our blocks. Remember, you can use any strategy that helps your brain! Take about 5 minutes to solve them quietly."
(Allow students to complete the warm-up. Circulate and observe.)
"Alright, let's go over these! What did you get for 4 + 3? [Student Name]? Seven! Great! How about 6 + 2? [Student Name]? Eight! Wonderful! Now for some of our new adding: 10 + 17. Who wants to share their answer? [Student Name]? Yes, 27! You just added another ten, making it 2 tens and 7 ones! And 20 + 13? [Student Name]? 33! You're getting so good at this! Last one, 30 + 5. [Student Name]? 35! Amazing job, everyone!"
Introduction: Quick Picture Addition (I Do - 5 minutes)
"Today, we're still working on our big goals! We'll keep practicing all kinds of addition, and specifically, we're going to learn another super helpful way to add a two-digit number to a multiple of ten. Instead of using actual blocks, we're going to draw quick pictures of them! Take a look at our Day 2 Slide Deck to see our objectives."
"Why are quick pictures helpful? Because sometimes we don't have our real blocks with us, but we can always draw a quick picture to help us think! It's like having a magic math drawing tool!"
"Watch me first for the 'I Do' part! I'm going to add 35 + 20 using quick pictures. When I say 'quick pictures,' I mean drawing a stick for a 'ten' and a little dot for a 'one.'"
"First, I need to draw 35. That's three tens sticks (draw three vertical lines: | | |) and five ones dots (draw five small dots next to the sticks: . . . . .)."
"Next, I need to add 20. The number 20 is two tens sticks (draw two more vertical lines: | |). There are no ones in 20, so I don't draw any dots."
"Now, to find my total, I count all my tens sticks together and all my ones dots together. Let's count the tens: One, two, three, four, five tens! And let's count the ones: One, two, three, four, five ones!"
"So, I have 5 tens and 5 ones. What number does that make? Yes, 55! So, 35 + 20 = 55! See, it's just like using the blocks, but we're drawing them quickly!"
Guided Practice: Let's Draw and Add! (We Do - 10 minutes)
"Now it's time for the 'We Do' part, and you'll get to use your dry-erase boards and markers! Let's try adding 42 + 10 together."
"Everyone, first draw 42 using quick pictures on your board. How many tens sticks? How many ones dots? [Pause for students to draw 4 tens sticks and 2 ones dots. Circulate and check.] Looks good!
"Now, add 10 to it using quick pictures. How many tens sticks do you need to add for 10? [Pause for response] One ten! Add it to your drawing. Any ones? [Pause for response] No!"
"Now, count all your tens sticks and all your ones dots. What number did you get? [Pause for response] Yes, 52! So, 42 + 10 = 52! Great job drawing and counting!"
"Let's try one more together! How about 28 + 30. Everyone, draw 28 first. [Pause for students to draw 2 tens sticks and 8 ones dots. Circulate and check.]
"Now, add 30. How many tens sticks should you add for 30? [Pause for response] Three tens! Add them to your drawing. [Pause]
"Count all your tens now. How many? [Pause] Five tens! And how many ones? [Pause] Eight ones!"
"Five tens and eight ones makes...? [Pause] 58! Fantastic! 28 + 30 = 58. You are becoming quick picture experts!"
Small Group Activity: Picture Perfect Addition (You Do - 30 minutes)
"You are all doing an amazing job with these quick pictures! Now it's time for the 'You Do' part in your small groups. Each group will get a Day 2 Worksheet, and you'll work together to solve the problems using quick pictures."
"Remember to draw your tens sticks and ones dots clearly for each problem. Talk to your group members, help each other, and make sure everyone understands how to use the quick pictures to find the answer. When you find the answer, write it on your worksheet."
"I'll be walking around to see your awesome drawings and answer any questions. Let's make some picture-perfect additions!"
