    - Ask students, "Who can tell me what 'add' means?" (Expected: to put together, to make more).

Step 2

Introduce the Adding Adventure Story (5 minutes)

5 minutes

Step 3

Guided Practice: Solving Word Problems (6 minutes)

6 minutes

  • Present each slide of the Slide Deck: Adding Adventure Story one by one.
    - For each word problem, read it aloud clearly.
    - Model how to use manipulatives to represent the numbers in the problem and then combine them to find the total.
    - Encourage students to use their own manipulatives to solve along with you.
    - After solving with manipulatives, guide students to draw a picture to represent the problem on their Worksheet: My Adding Adventure.
    - Write the number sentence (e.g., 2 + 3 = 5) on the board and have students write it on their worksheet.

Step 4

Wrap-Up: Share and Reflect (2 minutes)

2 minutes

  • Have a few students share their drawings and solutions for one of the word problems.

Welcome to Our Adding Adventure!

Get ready for a math journey! ➕🐻🌟

We're going to solve some fun adding stories today!

Welcome students and introduce the exciting journey we're about to take into addition! Explain that we'll be using our math brains to solve some special stories.

What's an Adding Story?

It's a math story with numbers!

We read the story to figure out how many we have altogether or in total.

Explain what a word problem is in simple terms: it's a math story where we have to figure out how many in total.

Bear Buddies!

🐻🐻

Two bears were playing in the forest.

Then, three more bears came to play! 🐻🐻🐻

How many bears are playing altogether?

Read the problem aloud. Guide students to use their counting bears to represent the 2 bears and then the 3 more bears. Count them all together. Then, discuss how to draw it.

Apple Pickin' Fun!

🍎🍎🍎🍎

Sarah picked 4 red apples.

Her friend picked 2 more red apples. 🍎🍎

How many apples do they have in total?

Read the problem aloud. Guide students to use their manipulatives to represent the 4 apples and then the 2 more apples. Count them all together. Then, discuss how to draw it.

Fluttering Butterflies!

🦋🦋🦋

Three butterflies were flying in the garden.

Four more butterflies joined them! 🦋🦋🦋🦋

How many butterflies are there altogether?

Read the problem aloud. Guide students to use their manipulatives to represent the 3 butterflies and then the 4 more butterflies. Count them all together. Then, discuss how to draw it.

Great Adding, Adventurers!

You are amazing addition problem solvers!

We put groups together to find the total.

Review what they learned and praise their effort. Reinforce that adding means putting groups together.
