* Set up the Addition & Subtraction Game materials if playing a physical version.
Step 1
Session 1: Addition within 10 (30 minutes)
30 minutes
Beginning (5 minutes)
- Warm-Up & Hook: Display the Addition Warm-Up. Ask students to quickly solve the problems mentally or using fingers. Review answers together. (2 minutes)
- Introduce Objective: "Today we're going to become Addition Masters! We'll practice adding numbers up to 10 to make our math brains super strong!" (1 minute)
- Quick Review: Use the Slide Deck (slides 1-3) to quickly review what addition means and basic strategies (counting on, using fingers, drawing pictures). (2 minutes)
Middle (20 minutes)
- Guided Practice: Work through 2-3 addition problems within 10 as a class using the Slide Deck (slides 4-6). Encourage students to share their strategies. (5 minutes)
- Independent Practice: Distribute the Addition Practice Worksheet. Explain that students will work independently on the problems. Circulate to provide support and individualized help. (10 minutes)
- Partner Check (Optional): Allow students to briefly compare answers with a partner. Emphasize discussing how they got their answers. (5 minutes)
End (5 minutes)
- Share Out: Ask a few students to share a problem they found easy and one they found a bit tricky from the Addition Practice Worksheet. Discuss common strategies. (3 minutes)
- Cool Down: Have students give a thumbs up if they feel good about addition, thumbs to the side if they need a little more practice, or thumbs down if they are confused. Reassure them that practice helps everyone improve. (2 minutes)
Step 2
Session 2: Subtraction within 10 (30 minutes)
30 minutes
Beginning (5 minutes)
- Warm-Up & Hook: Display the Subtraction Warm-Up. Ask students to solve the problems. Review answers together. (2 minutes)
- Introduce Objective: "Yesterday we were Addition Masters, and today we're going to become Subtraction Superstars! We'll practice taking away numbers up to 10." (1 minute)
- Quick Review: Use the Slide Deck (slides 7-9) to quickly review what subtraction means and basic strategies (counting back, crossing out, using number lines). (2 minutes)
Middle (20 minutes)
- Guided Practice: Work through 2-3 subtraction problems within 10 as a class using the Slide Deck (slides 10-12). Encourage students to share their strategies. (5 minutes)
- Independent Practice: Distribute the Subtraction Practice Worksheet. Students will work independently. Circulate to provide support. (10 minutes)
- Engaging Activity/Game: Introduce the Addition & Subtraction Game to reinforce both concepts in a fun way. Play for 5 minutes as a class or in small groups. (5 minutes)
End (5 minutes)
- Share Out: Ask students to share one new thing they learned or one strategy they used for subtraction. (3 minutes)
- Cool Down: "Think about everything we learned about adding and subtracting. What is one thing you feel more confident about today?" Students can share verbally or write it down quickly. (2 minutes)

Addition Masters!
Let's Get Ready to Add!
Welcome students and generate excitement for reviewing addition. Ask: 'Who's ready to become an Addition Master?'
What is Addition?
Addition means putting groups together.
It helps us find the total number of things!
Keywords: add, plus, sum, total, altogether.
Review the concept of addition. Ask: 'What does it mean to add?' 'What are some words we use for addition?' (plus, total, sum, altogether).
Strategies for Adding
- Count on your fingers
- Draw pictures
- Use a number line
- Count in your head
Discuss different strategies students can use. Model each one briefly if needed. Ask: 'How do you like to add?'
Let's Practice Together!
What is 3 + 4 = ?
Guided Practice Problem 1. Work through this together. Ask students to use a strategy to solve. Call on students to share their thinking.
Another One!
What is 6 + 2 = ?
Guided Practice Problem 2. Repeat the process. Encourage students to try a different strategy this time.
Last One Together!
What is 5 + 5 = ?
Guided Practice Problem 3. Last guided practice. Ensure everyone understands before moving to independent work.
Your Turn to Practice!
Work on your Addition Practice Worksheet independently.
Use your favorite strategies!
(Remember to keep an eye on students and provide individual support.)
Transition to independent practice. Explain the worksheet. Remind students to try their best and use strategies.
Subtraction Superstars!
Let's Get Ready to Subtract!
Welcome students back to Session 2. Build on the excitement from Session 1. Ask: 'Who's ready to become a Subtraction Superstar?'
What is Subtraction?
Subtraction means taking a part away from a whole group.
It helps us find how many are left or the difference.
Keywords: subtract, minus, take away, difference, left, fewer.
Review the concept of subtraction. Ask: 'What does it mean to subtract?' 'What are some words we use for subtraction?' (minus, take away, difference, left over).
Strategies for Subtracting
- Count back on your fingers
- Draw pictures and cross out
- Use a number line
- Think 'what do I add to get that number?'
Discuss different strategies for subtraction. Model each one briefly if needed. Ask: 'How do you like to subtract?'
Let's Subtract Together!
What is 8 - 3 = ?
Guided Practice Problem 1. Work through this together. Ask students to use a strategy to solve.
Another Subtraction!
What is 10 - 4 = ?
Guided Practice Problem 2. Repeat the process. Encourage students to try a different strategy.
Last One Together!
What is 7 - 1 = ?
Guided Practice Problem 3. Last guided practice. Ensure understanding.
Your Turn to Practice!
Work on your Subtraction Practice Worksheet independently.
Show your work if you like!
(Circulate and offer assistance as needed.)
Transition to independent practice. Explain the worksheet. Remind students to use strategies.
Game Time: Add & Subtract Challenge!
Let's play a fun game to practice both!
(Refer to the Addition & Subtraction Game for instructions.)
Introduce the game. Explain the rules simply and clearly. Play for a few minutes as a class or in small groups.
Great Work Today!
You are all Math Whizzes!
What was one thing you learned or felt more confident about today?
Lead a brief reflection. Ask students to share their thoughts or strategies.
