Lesson Plan

Add It Up!

Students will be able to accurately add two-digit numbers, both with and without regrouping, using various strategies.

Mastering 2-digit addition is a fundamental building block for all future math concepts and is used in everyday life, from counting money to understanding time.

Audience

2nd Grade Students

Time

30 minutes

Approach

Interactive game-based learning and peer collaboration.

Materials

Whiteboard or Projector, Markers or Pens, Add It Up! Slide Deck, Addition Game Cards, Addition Worksheet, and Addition Answer Key

Prep

Prepare Materials

15 minutes

Step 1

Warm-Up: Mental Math Challenge

5 minutes

  1. Begin by asking students a few simple mental addition questions (e.g., 10 + 5, 20 + 7, 30 + 10).
    2. Transition by explaining that today they'll be tackling bigger numbers using a fun game.

Step 2

Introduction to 2-Digit Addition (with Slides)

5 minutes

  1. Use the Add It Up! Slide Deck to briefly review place value (tens and ones).
    2. Explain the concept of 2-digit addition, both with and without regrouping, using the examples on the slides.
    3. Emphasize starting with the ones place.

Step 3

Game Time: Addition Card Challenge

15 minutes

  1. Divide students into pairs or small groups.
    2. Distribute one set of Addition Game Cards to each group.
    3. Instruct students to shuffle the cards and place them face down.
    4. Each student draws two cards and adds the two-digit numbers together.
    5. Students should show their work on personal whiteboards or scrap paper.
    6. They can check each other's answers or use the Addition Answer Key for verification. Encourage discussion if answers differ.

Step 4

Wrap-Up & Independent Practice

5 minutes

  1. Bring the class back together.
    2. Briefly discuss any challenges or interesting strategies discovered during the game.
    3. Distribute the Addition Worksheet for independent practice or homework.
    4. Collect any remaining game cards.

Add It Up! Ready to Level Up Your Math Skills?

Today, we're going to become 2-digit addition champions!

Welcome students and generate excitement for the lesson. Connect to previous knowledge of addition.

Place Value Power!

Before we add, let's remember our friends: Tens and Ones!

  • The number 23 has 2 tens and 3 ones.
  • The number 47 has 4 tens and 7 ones.

We always start adding in the Ones column!

Briefly review place value, reminding students about tens and ones columns. Ask for examples of 2-digit numbers and identify their tens and ones.

Adding Without Regrouping: Easy Peasy!

Let's try one:

23 + 14

  1. Add the Ones: 3 + 4 = 7
  2. Add the Tens: 2 + 1 = 3

So, 23 + 14 = 37!

Introduce addition without regrouping with a clear example. Emphasize adding ones first, then tens. Do an example together.

Adding With Regrouping: It's Magic!

Sometimes, our Ones column gets too full!

38 + 25

  1. Add the Ones: 8 + 5 = 13 (Uh oh, too many ones!)
  2. Regroup: Keep the 3 in the Ones column, carry the 1 (ten) to the Tens column.
  3. Add the Tens: 1 (carried over) + 3 + 2 = 6

So, 38 + 25 = 63!

Introduce addition with regrouping. Explain 'carrying over' the ten to the tens column. Walk through the example step-by-step.

Game Time: Add It Up!

Let's play with our Addition Game Cards!

How to Play:

  1. Work with your partner.
  2. Draw two cards.
  3. Add the two 2-digit numbers.
  4. Show your work on paper or a whiteboard.
  5. Check your answers with the Addition Answer Key.

Good luck, math wizards!

Explain the game rules clearly. Ensure students understand how to play, show their work, and check answers. Encourage teamwork.

  1. 32 + 15 = 47

    • Ones place: 2 + 5 = 7
    • Tens place: 3 + 1 = 4
    • Result: 47
  2. 41 + 27 = 68

    • Ones place: 1 + 7 = 8
    • Tens place: 4 + 2 = 6
    • Result: 68
  3. 53 + 16 = 69

    • Ones place: 3 + 6 = 9
    • Tens place: 5 + 1 = 6
    • Result: 69
