Who Are We Lesson Plan

Students will introduce themselves, share personal interests, and practice active listening to build connections and prepare for future group work.

Fostering rapport and listening skills creates a welcoming environment, boosts student confidence, and lays the groundwork for effective collaboration.

4th and 5th Grade Students

Interactive intros with partner interviews and reflection.

Materials

Markers, Student Name Tag Template, and Getting to Know You Worksheet

Prep

Prepare Materials

5 minutes

  • Print one copy per student of Getting to Know You Worksheet.
  • Print and cut Student Name Tag Template for each student.
  • Gather a set of markers for name tag creation.
  • Arrange chairs in a circle to facilitate discussion.

Step 1

Warm-Up

2 minutes

  • Welcome students and explain that today’s goal is to get to know one another and practice active listening.
  • Briefly model active listening: make eye contact, nod, and repeat back a phrase you heard.

Step 2

Name Tag Creation & Circle Introductions

5 minutes

  • Give each student a name tag and a marker.
  • Instruct students to write their name and draw a small icon representing a hobby or interest on their tag.
  • Once complete, have students sit in a circle and, one by one, share their name and explain their icon to the group.

Step 3

Paired Interviews

7 minutes

  • Pair students with someone they know least.
  • Provide guiding questions:
    • What is your favorite book or movie?
    • What hobby or game do you enjoy most?
    • Share one interesting fact about yourself.
  • Students take turns asking and listening, then switch roles.
  • Encourage partners to use active listening: eye contact, nodding, and asking a follow-up question.

Step 4

Worksheet Reflection

4 minutes

  • Distribute Getting to Know You Worksheet.
  • Instruct students to record two things they learned about their partner and draw a small portrait or symbol.
  • Circulate to support students and ensure accuracy.

Step 5

Closing Reflection

2 minutes

  • Invite one or two volunteers to share something interesting they learned about their partner.
  • Reinforce the importance of listening and building connections.
  • Thank students for participating and encourage them to continue conversations during break times.

  • Build on others’ ideas: ask follow-up questions or share connections.

  • Your partner’s name tag and icon from the circle introductions.

  • Can someone give an example of a great follow-up question they asked?
  • Who would like to add on or ask a classmate about their interest?
  • How did using eye contact or nodding make your partner feel heard?

  • Practice these discussion skills at recess or during partner tasks.
  • Tomorrow, try interviewing someone you haven’t talked to yet using these same prompts.
