Students will be able to define what an affirmation is and identify one positive affirmation they can use to promote self-esteem and a positive mindset.

Learning about affirmations helps students develop a positive self-image, build resilience, and foster a supportive classroom culture. This foundational skill can significantly impact their overall well-being and academic success.

  • Review the Affirmation Slide Deck to familiarize yourself with the content.
    - Read through the Affirmation Discussion Guide to prepare for leading the class discussion.
    - Ensure whiteboard or projector is ready to display the slide deck.

Step 1

Introduction to Affirmations (1 minute)

  • Begin by asking students: "How do your thoughts affect your day?"
    - Introduce the concept of positive self-talk.
    - Use Slide 1 to display the title and hook.

Step 2

What Are Affirmations? (2 minutes)

2 minutes

  • Explain what an affirmation is: a positive statement we say to ourselves to believe in our strengths and abilities.
    - Provide examples. (Use Slide 2)
    - Lead a brief discussion using prompts from the Affirmation Discussion Guide.

Step 3

Practice a Positive Affirmation (2 minutes)

2 minutes

  • Have students repeat a simple affirmation together, such as "I am capable!" or "I am kind!" (Display on Slide 3)
    - Ask students to think of one positive thing they like about themselves.
    - Conclude by emphasizing the importance of positive self-talk.

Begin by asking students: "How do your thoughts affect your day?" Introduce the concept of positive self-talk. Explain that our thoughts have power.

What Are Affirmations?

Positive statements we say to ourselves to believe in our strengths and abilities.

Examples:

  • I am smart.
  • I am a good friend.
  • I can do hard things.
  • I am brave.

Explain that affirmations are positive statements we say to ourselves. Give examples and ask students if they've ever heard of or used them before.

My Favorite Affirmation

Repeat after me:

I am capable!

What is one positive thing you like about yourself?

Lead students in repeating the affirmation. Encourage them to think about what positive qualities they possess.

Affirmation Discussion Guide

Time Allotted: 2 minutes

Introduction to Discussion

Teacher: "Now that we know what affirmations are, let's talk a little more about why they're important!"

Discussion Prompts

  1. What does it mean to have "positive self-talk"? How is it different from negative self-talk?


  2. Why do you think it's important to say kind and encouraging things to yourself?


  3. Can you think of a time when saying something positive to yourself might help you feel better or do better at something? Share an example if you're comfortable.


Wrap-up

Teacher: "Great ideas! Remember, your words have power, especially the ones you say to yourself. Using affirmations can help you feel strong, smart, and ready for anything!"
