Prep

  • Review the You Are Amazing! Lesson Plan and all linked materials: You Are Amazing! Slide Deck, Self-Esteem Discussion Guide, and My Amazing Qualities Activity.
    - Prepare the projector/whiteboard for the slide deck.
    - Gather stickers or small pieces of paper for the activity.

Step 1

Introduction: What Makes You, YOU?

5 minutes

  • Begin by asking students: "What makes each of us unique and special?"
    - Introduce the concept of self-esteem using You Are Amazing! Slide Deck (Slide 1-2).
    - Explain that self-esteem is how we feel about ourselves, and it's important to feel good about who we are.

Step 2

Understanding Self-Esteem

10 minutes

  • Use You Are Amazing! Slide Deck (Slide 3-5) to further define self-esteem and discuss examples.
    - Facilitate a class discussion using the Self-Esteem Discussion Guide prompts.
    - Encourage students to share their thoughts on what makes someone feel good about themselves and what might make them feel not-so-good.

Step 3

My Amazing Qualities Activity

10 minutes

  • Introduce the My Amazing Qualities Activity using You Are Amazing! Slide Deck (Slide 6).
    - Distribute stickers or small pieces of paper.
    - Instruct students to write one positive quality about themselves on each sticker/paper.
    - Have students share one quality with a partner or small group, then stick their qualities on a designated

What makes you, YOU? What makes each of us unique and special?

Greet students and introduce the topic of what makes each of them special. Transition to the idea of self-esteem.

What is Self-Esteem?

It's how you feel about yourself!

  • Feeling good about who you are
  • Knowing your strengths
  • Believing in yourself

Define self-esteem in simple terms for 4th graders. Emphasize that it's about how we feel about ourselves inside.

Good Self-Esteem Looks Like...

When you have good self-esteem, you might:

  • Feel proud of your accomplishments
  • Try new things even if they are hard
  • Speak up for yourself or others
  • Believe you can learn and grow

Provide examples of good self-esteem (confidence, trying new things).

Low Self-Esteem Can Feel Like...

When your self-esteem is low, you might:

  • Feel shy or unsure
  • Give up easily
  • Think negative thoughts about yourself
  • Avoid trying new things

Provide examples of low self-esteem (giving up easily, negative self-talk).

Building Your Self-Esteem

Good news! You can always work on building your self-esteem!

  • Focus on what you do well
  • Use kind words when you talk to yourself
  • Be proud of who you are!

Explain that self-esteem can change and that we can work to build it up. Connect to the discussion guide.

My Amazing Qualities Activity!

Let's celebrate YOU!

  1. Write one positive quality about yourself on each sticker/paper.
  2. Think about your strengths and what makes you special.
  3. Be ready to share with a partner or small group!

  • What makes each person in our class special and unique?
  • Do you think it's important to feel good about yourself? Why or why not?

Understanding Self-Esteem

  • Can someone explain in their own words what self-esteem means?
  • Think about a time when you felt really good about something you did. How did that make you feel inside?
  • What are some things that can make people feel good about themselves?
  • What are some things that might make someone feel not-so-good about themselves?
  • Is it okay to not feel great about yourself all the time? What can we do when we have those feelings?
  • Why do you think it's important to know your strengths and good qualities?
  • How can using kind words when talking to yourself help your self-esteem?

My Amazing Qualities

Think about all the wonderful things that make you, YOU! What are your strengths? What do you do well? What do people like about you?

Write one positive quality or strength about yourself on each sticker or small piece of paper provided by your teacher. Think about things like:

  • Being kind
  • Being creative
  • Being a good listener
  • Being athletic
  • Being smart
  • Being funny
  • Being a good friend
  • Being brave
  • Being helpful
