Where Do I Stand?

Understanding students' current abilities in identifying social conflicts and applying coping/problem-solving skills is essential for tailoring effective social-emotional learning interventions and supports. This pre-assessment helps teachers identify areas where students may need more targeted instruction.

  • Display Slide 1 of the Slide Deck.
    - Briefly introduce the purpose of today's lesson: to see what students already know about social conflicts and how to handle them.
    - Emphasize that this is not a graded test but a way for the teacher to understand their needs. Display Slide 2.

Step 2

Pre-Assessment Activity

10 minutes

  • Distribute the Social Scenarios Pre-Test to each student.
    - Explain that students should read each scenario and answer the questions to the best of their ability. Reiterate that this is an individual activity and to do their best.
    - Display Slide 3 for visual instructions.
    - Circulate around the room to provide quiet support and ensure students are on task. Collect the pre-tests once completed.

Step 3

Initial Reflection: My Skills Starting Point

10 minutes

  • After collecting the pre-tests, distribute the My Skills Starting Point Journal.
    - Explain that this journal is a personal reflection about their own skills.
    - Display Slide 4 for instructions.
    - Give students ample time to write their responses.
    - Reassure students that they will have opportunities to learn and practice these skills throughout the year.

This journal is a chance for you to think about how you handle different social situations. There are no right or wrong answers, just your honest thoughts. Your responses will help your teacher understand how to best support you!


Part 1: Identifying Challenges

  1. Think about a time you experienced a disagreement or a tough social situation with a friend, family member, or classmate. Describe what happened.
