What Will You Be? Lesson Plan
Students explore different jobs in their community, learn related vocabulary, and illustrate their future career interests by creating a drawing of their dream job.
Introducing children to a variety of careers broadens their aspirations, builds early awareness of community roles, and connects personal interests to future possibilities.

10 minutes
- Print enough copies of Future Jobs Worksheet and My Dream Job Drawing Activity for each student.
- Load the What Will You Be? Slide Deck on the classroom projector.
- Print or have digital access to the Community Workers Reading Booklet.
- Arrange seating for group reading and drawing activity.
- Familiarize yourself with key vocabulary in the reading.
Step 1
Introduction
5 minutes
- Display first slide of the What Will You Be? Slide Deck.
- Ask students: “What do you want to be when you grow up?” and take a few responses.
- Show pictures of different community workers on slides.
- Introduce key jobs: teacher, doctor, firefighter, police officer, chef, artist.
Step 2
Reading Community Workers
7 minutes
- Hand out the Community Workers Reading Booklet.
- Read aloud pages 1–3, pausing to show pictures and ask simple questions.
- Highlight one or two jobs and their roles in the community.
Step 3
Discussion & Vocabulary
5 minutes
- Revisit key vocabulary: community, career, job.
- Ask students to share when they see these workers in their neighborhood.
- Encourage 1–2 students to describe what a worker does.
Step 4
Dream Job Drawing
5 minutes
- Distribute the My Dream Job Drawing Activity.
- Instruct students to draw themselves doing their dream job.
- Provide crayons or markers for details.
Step 5
Sharing & Reflection
3 minutes
- Invite 3–4 students to share their drawings with the class.
- Ask each student: “Why did you choose this job?”
- Praise effort and relate drawings back to community roles.

Welcome to our lesson on jobs and careers!
Welcome students! Today we are going to learn about different jobs and imagine what we want to be when we grow up. Point to the title and say it aloud.
When I Grow Up…
• Think about your favorite job.
• Raise your hand and share: What will you be?
Ask: “What do you want to be when you grow up?” Encourage everyone to think and raise hands. Note responses.
Community Helpers

• Chef
• Artist
Introduce key community helper jobs. Show or point to each picture. Ask: “Have you ever seen a firefighter/doctor/chef?”
Reading Time
Let’s read about community helpers!
Open to pages 1–3 and look at the pictures.
Hand out the Community Workers Reading Booklet. Read pages 1–3 aloud. Pause on each page to ask: “What is this helper doing?”
Draw Your Dream Job
• Draw yourself at work.
• Use crayons or markers.
• Add details (clothes, tools).
Distribute drawing paper and crayons. Say: “Draw yourself doing your dream job. Add details!” Walk around to support.
Share & Reflect
• Show your drawing.
• Tell us: Why this job?
Invite 3–4 students to come up and show their drawings. Ask each: “Why did you choose this job?” Praise each effort.
