Superpower Career Lesson Plan

Students will identify their personal interests and talents (their "superpowers") and connect them to various college and career pathways.

This lesson helps students envision future possibilities, understand the importance of their current learning, and begin to see how their unique strengths can lead to fulfilling careers.

Prep

Teacher Preparation

10 minutes

  • Review all generated materials: Superpower Career Lesson Plan, What's Your Superpower Career? Slide Deck, Superpower Starter Warm Up, Career Explorer Activity, and Future Me Cool Down.
    - Make copies of the Superpower Starter Warm Up and Career Explorer Activity for each student.
    - Ensure projector/whiteboard is ready for the slide deck.

Step 1

Warm-Up: Superpower Starter

5 minutes

  • Distribute the Superpower Starter Warm Up to each student.
    - Ask students to complete the warm-up individually.
    - Invite a few students to share their chosen superpower and how it might help people. Facilitate a brief discussion about different kinds of 'help'.

Step 2

Introduction: What's a Superpower Career?

5 minutes

  • Display "What's Your Superpower Career?" Slide Deck (Slides 1-3).
    - Introduce the concept of a "superpower" as a special skill, talent, or interest.
    - Explain that a "Superpower Career" is a job where you get to use your unique talents and things you love to do every day.

Step 3

Activity: Career Explorer

15 minutes

  • Distribute the Career Explorer Activity.
    - Guide students through the activity, prompting them to think about their interests and how they relate to different jobs.
    - Encourage small group or partner discussions as students complete the worksheet.
    - Circulate to provide support and answer questions.

Step 4

Share & Reflect

3 minutes

  • Ask a few students to share one of their identified "superpowers" and a potential career that uses it.
    - Lead a brief class discussion on how exploring their interests now can help them think about their future and what they want to learn more about in school.

Step 5

Cool Down: Future Me

2 minutes

  • Distribute the Future Me Cool Down.
    - Ask students to complete the cool-down ticket, reflecting on one thing they learned.
    - Collect the cool-down responses as an exit ticket.

Welcome students to the lesson. Engage them by asking what they think the title means. Encourage them to think about what makes them special.

What's a "Superpower"?

It's a special skill or talent you have!
What are you really good at?
What do you love to do?

Ask students to brainstorm what a "superpower" is. Guide them to think beyond comic book powers to personal strengths, things they enjoy, or things they are good at.

Connecting Superpowers to Careers

Imagine a job where you use your favorite superpower every single day! That's a Superpower Career!

Explain that school helps them discover and develop these 'superpowers.' Connect their interests in subjects to potential career fields.

Transition to the activity. Explain that they will now have a chance to explore their own unique superpowers and how they might fit into different careers.

  1. List Your Top 3 Superpowers/Interests: What are three things you genuinely love to do, are curious about, or are really good at?
    * Example: "I love drawing and creating stories."

  2. Brainstorm Careers: For each superpower/interest, think of 1-2 jobs that might use that skill. Don't worry if you don't know much about the job yet – just brainstorm!
