Prep

Review Materials and Set Up

10 minutes

Step 1

Warm-Up: My Favorite Pillow

5 minutes

  • Begin the lesson with the My Favorite Pillow warm-up activity. Ask students to share what they love about their favorite pillow and why it's comfortable. This connects to personal comfort and sets the stage for discussing a cozy sleep space.
    * Facilitate a brief class discussion, encouraging 2-3 students to share their responses.

Step 2

Introduction: What Makes a Good Sleep Space?

7 minutes

  • Introduce the topic using the My Perfect Sleepy Room slide deck, focusing on the first few slides that introduce the idea of a good sleep space.
    * Ask students: "What do you think makes a good place to sleep?" Write down their initial ideas on the whiteboard or chart paper.
    * Guide the discussion towards factors like darkness, quiet, and comfort, using prompts from the slide deck.

Step 3

Exploring Sleep Environment Factors

8 minutes

  • Continue through the My Perfect Sleepy Room slide deck, explaining each element of a good sleep space (darkness, quiet, comfort, cool temperature) in simple terms.
    * For each factor, ask students for examples or how they achieve it in their own bedrooms. For instance, for 'darkness,' ask: "How do you make your room dark at night?"
    * Emphasize the 'why' behind each factor – how it helps our bodies and brains get good rest.

Step 4

Activity: Design Your Dream Bedroom

10 minutes

  • Distribute the Design Your Dream Bedroom activity sheets.
    * Explain the instructions: students will draw and label their ideal sleep space, incorporating the elements discussed (darkness, quiet, comfort, cool).
    * Circulate around the room, offering assistance and prompting students with questions like: "How did you make your room dark in your drawing?" or "What makes your bed comfortable?"
    * Allow students to share their designs with a partner or the whole class if time permits.

Slide Deck

My Perfect Sleepy Room

Where do you love to sleep?
What makes it feel special?

Welcome students and introduce the idea of a cozy, perfect sleepy room. Ask them to think about what makes them feel comfortable when they sleep.

Darkness Helps Us Sleep!

When it's dark, our bodies know it's time to rest.
How can we make our room dark?
* Close curtains or blinds
* Turn off lights
* No bright screens (like phones or tablets)!

Introduce the first key factor: darkness. Explain why darkness helps us sleep and give simple examples.

Quiet, Please!

Loud noises can wake us up.
How can we make our room quiet?
* Turn off the TV or music
* Ask family to be quiet near your room
* Maybe use a fan for soft, steady noise (white noise)!

Introduce the second factor: quiet. Explain why quiet helps us sleep and give examples of how to make a room quiet.

Super Comfy Sleep!

When we're comfy, it's easier to relax.
What makes your sleep space comfy?
* A soft pillow and blanket
* Cozy pajamas
* A favorite stuffed animal

Introduce the third factor: comfort. Discuss what makes a bed and room comfortable.

Just Right Temperature

Our bodies like to be a little cool when we sleep.
How can we make our room just right?
* Open a window (if it's safe)
* Use a light blanket
* Ask a grown-up to adjust the thermostat

Introduce the fourth factor: cool temperature. Explain that a slightly cool room is best for sleep.
