Unlocking Study Superpowers

Welcome 9th graders!
Discover your unique learning style and supercharge your study habits.

Welcome students and introduce the lesson. Explain that today they’ll uncover their personal study “superpowers” by discovering their learning style.

What Are Learning Styles?

Learning styles are the ways you prefer to take in and process information:
• Visual: learn by seeing (graphs, charts, diagrams)
• Auditory: learn by hearing (lectures, discussions, recordings)
• Kinesthetic: learn by doing (hands-on activities, movement)

Define learning styles and give everyday examples (e.g., reading vs. listening vs. hands-on projects). Engage students by asking for examples.

Why Knowing Your Style Matters

Tailoring your study methods boosts:
• Understanding
• Retention
• Motivation
• Confidence

Connect the importance of self-awareness to real study successes. Ask a volunteer to share how a method helped them learn.

Visual Learners

Traits:
• Prefer diagrams, charts, maps
• Use color coding and mind maps
Study Tips:
• Create flashcards and infographics
• Highlight and sketch key ideas

Highlight common traits of visual learners and model note-taking with colors or diagrams on the board.

Auditory Learners

Traits:
• Learn best by listening and speaking
• Enjoy discussions, lectures, and rhymes
Study Tips:
• Record and replay notes
• Teach the material to a friend

Play a short audio clip or have students whisper a concept to a partner to illustrate auditory learning.

Kinesthetic Learners

Traits:
• Prefer hands-on activities and movement
• Remember by doing and experimenting
Study Tips:
• Use models and role-play
• Take frequent study breaks

Invite a student to stand and act out a simple concept (e.g., scientific process) to show kinesthetic style.

Learning Styles Quiz

  1. Grab a copy of the Learning Styles Quiz.
  2. Circle the activities you prefer most.
  3. Hand it in when done for quick scoring.

Distribute the quiz handout. Explain how to circle preferred options and collect quizzes for scoring.

Study Strategies by Style

Review the Learning Styles Strategies Chart:
• Visual: diagrams, color coding
• Auditory: discussions, recordings
• Kinesthetic: simulations, movement

Display the strategies chart on the board or projector. Guide students to notice techniques for each style.

Strategy Brainstorm

In your style groups:

  1. Brainstorm 2 additional study techniques.
  2. Prepare to share one strategy per style with the class.

Divide class into three groups by dominant style. Give each group 5 minutes to brainstorm new strategies.

Reflect & Plan

Complete the Learning Styles Reflection Worksheet:
• Write one specific way you will adapt your study habits based on your style.

Distribute exit tickets. Collect responses to assess each student’s understanding and commitment.
