Slide Deck

Tracking Your Triumphs

A 30-minute lesson on monitoring your academic and personal progress.

Today’s agenda:
• Set SMART goals
• Practice progress logging
• Reflect on achievements
• Plan next steps

Welcome students and introduce today’s focus on tracking personal and academic progress. Briefly outline the flow: objectives, goal-setting, logging, reflection, and exit slip.

Lesson Objectives

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to:

• Define progress monitoring and its benefits
• Create two academic and one personal SMART goal
• Complete a weekly progress log entry
• Use self-reflection prompts to evaluate your growth

Draw attention to what they will learn and why it matters. Invite quick nods or thumbs-up if they agree with each objective.

What Is Progress Monitoring?

• A strategy to track progress toward goals over time
• Builds self-regulation and motivation
• Helps you celebrate wins and address challenges

Think-Pair-Share: Recall a time you tracked something (e.g., fitness, savings).

Explain progress monitoring: the ongoing process of checking in on goals to stay motivated and adjust as needed. Ask: “Have you ever tracked a goal before? What happened?”

Setting SMART Goals

S = Specific: Clear and detailed
M = Measurable: Quantifiable criteria
A = Achievable: Realistic and within reach
R = Relevant: Aligned with your priorities
T = Time-bound: Defined deadline

Activity: Write 2 academic + 1 personal SMART goal.

Introduce the SMART framework. Walk through each letter with examples (e.g., Specific: “Read 20 pages per day”). Encourage them to jot ideas.

Weekly Progress Log (Example)

Columns:
• Goal
• Week Of
• Action Steps Taken
• Progress Made (e.g., % complete)
• Notes/Reflection

Example Entry:
Goal: Improve biology grade
Week Of: Sept 10–16
Action Steps: Reviewed notes 4 days, joined study group
Progress: 20% closer to target B+
Notes: Felt more confident on chapters 1–3

Show a mock-up of the Weekly Progress Log Template. Model filling out each column for one week. Emphasize consistency and honest reflection.

Self-Reflection Prompts

Choose any two prompts:

  1. What is one recent success I’m proud of? Why?
  2. What was a challenge I faced? How did I address it?
  3. What patterns do I notice in my progress this week?
  4. What is one adjustment I can make to reach my goal faster?

Distribute the Self-Reflection Prompts Handout. Invite students to complete two prompts silently, then share if time allows.

Exit Slip

Write one concrete action you will take next week to track a goal.

Examples:
• “I will log my study time every evening.”
• “I will reflect for 5 minutes on Fridays.”

Turn in your slip as you leave.

Explain the exit slip: a quick written commitment for next week. Collect slips to gauge readiness and commitment.

Key Takeaways & Next Steps

• Progress monitoring builds responsibility and confidence.
• SMART goals keep you focused.
• Regular logs and reflection reveal growth.

Next: Keep using your log and revisit goals every week!

Summarize the key takeaways and encourage students to use these tools throughout the semester. Open the floor for any final questions.
